Quidditch - the game where Harry's magical skills come to the fore
Harry Potter's initiation into the amazing magical world that has been kept from him for eleven years is exciting and dramatic, and we follow him as he discovers magic, extra doorways through solid brick walls, flying on broomsticks... and Quidditch.
Quid-what?
Harry first learns about Quidditch from Ron Weasley, when they first meet on the train to Hogwarts. Ron doesn't do a very good job of explaining the game, and Harry is still a little confused when the strangest thing happens to him after his very first flight on a broomstick - Professor McGonagall, instead of punishing him for flying dangerously, selects him for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, making him the youngest player in a century.
To top it off, a brand new Nimbus 2000 broomstick lands on Harry's table with the breakfast post, and he becomes the only first-year to be allowed his own broomstick.

Catch Up on the First Seven
How is Quidditch played?
3 Chasers
1 Keeper
2 Beaters
1 Seeker
And there are four balls used in a game:1 Quaffle (a big red ball)
2 Bludgers (slightly smaller, black balls)
1 Snitch (a tiny golden ball with wings)
Quidditch is played on a stadium surrounded by raised seating. At each end of the pitch are the three goal posts, each with a hoop through which the Chasers have to throw the Quaffle in order to score points.
The Keeper tries to prevent the opposing team's Chasers from scoring through the goal posts.
The two Bludger balls fly through the air and will knock players from their broomsticks if they are caught unawares. The two Beaters' job is to use a club to prevent the Bludgers from flying towards their team mates, and aim them instead towards the other team.
The Snitch is released at the start of the game, and each team's Seeker's job is to watch for the Snitch, chase after it (dodging through all the Chasers, Beaters, and flying Bludgers) and catch it. Catching the Snitch ends the game and adds 150 points to that team's score, usually meaning a win for that side.
A copy of Quidditch Through the Ages is essential for learning the finer points of the game.
Quidditch for Muggles
Unfortunately Quidditch equipment is rarely available to the Muggle community, not to mention the difficulty of flying a broomstick. But a form of Quidditch can still be played by non-magical people. You will need:
2 Bludgers - soccer balls or other soft toy balls
1 Quaffle - basketball
1 Snitch - ping pong ball or badminton shuttlecock
optional broomsticks
basketball, rugby, soccer, football, or footy field
soccer or basketball goal posts can be used, or you can create round hula hoop goals if you wish
20 people to play this version
Players (7 per side):
3 Chasers
2 Beaters
1 Seeker
1 Keeper
2 Bludger throwers
3 Snitch throwers
1 Referee
The two Bludger throwers stand on opposite ends of the pitch, beneath or next to the goal posts, throwing and collecting the Bludgers, attempting to cause havoc for any player. Beaters attempt to intercept the Bludgers in order to use them against opposing players.
The three Snitch throwers draw straws for the right to be "Middle Snitch". Middle Snitch stands in the centre of the pitch with the Snitch, ready to release it into play. The two remaining Snitch throwers stand on the alternate ends of the pitch to the Bludger throwers, ready to catch and throw the Snitch from one to the other, trying to keep the Snitch out of the hands of either of the two Seekers. Only the Seekers and Snitch throwers may touch the Snitch, but players of one team can hold off opponents to enable their Seeker to reach a downed Snitch.
Start the game by releasing the Quaffle into play. Chasers throw the Quaffle to each other until one is in position to attempt a goal.
Beaters protect the Chasers and Seeker from the Bludgers and attempt to use the Bludgers to throw opposing Chasers or Seeker off their respective targets.
The Seeker must attempt to obtain the Snitch from the three Snitch throwers, while avoiding the Bludgers.
Catching the Snitch ends the game, but the game can also be played to a predetermined time for convenience.
Make your own Golden Snitch
A Golden Snitch should be very light-weight, so a ping-pong or table-tennis ball is an ideal base for the ball part of the snitch.Cut wings out of paper doilies or tulle netting (unravel a shower puff).
Glue the wings onto the ping-pong ball.
Another ball that lends itself well to Quidditch is the Badminton Shuttlecock. Here you have ready made wings - all you need to do is cut the lacy shuttle part into two wings and shape them.
Ask an adult to help you spray-paint the Snitch with gold paint.
Do you need a portable goal post?
In addition, this goal post is a kit that you can take apart and re-make into dozens of other cool formations.
Muggles really do play Quidditch
- Muggle Quidditch in a Canadian school
- The Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor and a Grade 7 class from Windsor have created their own Muggle Quidditch. The activity was originally developed as a way to improve creative writing scores in English classes, but led to the development of a frequently played sport in physical education classes in many Windsor, Ontario schools.
- Quidditch in New Orleans
- The 2007 Borders Riverside Quidditch Classic was held in New Orleans in May.
- Pan-Magical games - Quidditch in Chicago
- In August 2008, the Trade Winds Quidditch Tournament will bring together enthusiasts from around the world to play that most revered wizarding sport of all: Quidditch. This test of determination, enthusiasm, and teamwork challenges tournament participants to score the most points - and capture the Golden Snitch - on their way to winning the Continents Cup. Players will receive custom jerseys with their preferred name and number, and may specify preferred teammates at the time of registration.
- Quidditch sweeps into Princeton
- Quidditch at Princeton University. Adding to the excitement of the first intercollegiate Quidditch match in Princeton's illustrious 262-year history, television crews from CBS News, ESPN and MTVU were on hand to film the game.

Every bag of Harry Potter Candy is a treasure hunt of new and unusual flavors including four new flavours -- earwax, vomit, spinach and dirt! Be warned these flavours are shockingly realistic. The disgusting flavours are mixed among some more traditional Jelly Belly flavours like Bubble Gum, Blueberry, Buttered Popcorn, Cotton Candy and more.
