Quilling Ideas
How to Make Your Own Basic Christmas Quilling Patterns
You can make other quilling patterns like this too
I would recommend starting with a picture such as Christmas card and then look for the basic shapes that you can find within this picture and try and draw the whole picture out in the basic shapes that you know how to quill.
If you want to start with some basic ideas then I would recommend a quilled Christmas tree or a baby in a manger. These were the first two Christmas quilling patterns that I did.
Your quilled Christmas tree will consist basically of three different sized triangles, and then a number of small rectangles to make the base of the tree. You can also add various size rectangles and squares around the base for gifts.
A baby in a manger is made using a number of different triangles put at alternate angles to create the manger shape, a circle for the baby's head and a half moon for the body in swaddling clothes or a blanket.
You can use the same method of drawing out pictures in basic shapes to make virtually any quilling pattern you want provided it is in 2D.

Quilling on Wikipedia
Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is glued at the tip and the coil shaped, these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.
During the Renaissance, French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. The paper most commonly used was strips of paper trimmed from the gilded edges of books. These gilded paper strips were then rolled to create the quilled shapes. Quilling often imitated the original ironwork of the day.
In the 18th century, quilling became popular in Europe where gentle ladies of quality ("ladies of leisure") practiced the art. It was one of the few things ladies could do that was thought not too taxing for their minds or gentle dispositions. Quilling also spread to the Americas and there are a few examples from Colonial times.
Many quilled art works can be found on cabinets and stands, cribbage boards, ladies' purses, a wide range of both pictures and frames, work baskets, tea caddies, coats of arms and wine coasters. Storage boxes, larger than most jewelry boxes with drawers and/or tops that opened, quilled lock boxes, and much more. Some items were specially designed for quilling with recessed surfaces. Quilling was also combined or married with other techniques such as embroidery and painting.
The craft has gone through many transformations and changes through the ages using new techniques, styles and materials. Dimensional quilling creates 3D items.
Today, quilling is seeing a resurgence in popularity with quillers (people who practice the art of quilling) on every continent and in every walk of life. No longer confined to the "upper classes", this is a peoples art form and the beauty of the art is always expanding. The craft has become increasingly popular due to the low cost of the material. It is used to decorate wedding invitations, birth announcements, greeting cards, scrapbook pages, and boxes. Quilling can be found in art galleries in Europe and in the United States and is an art that is practiced around the world.

How to Make Quilled Roses
The History of Paper Quilling and Paper Filigree
It probably began in religious houses such as abbeys and monastries as these were centers of learning and also dealt with manuscripts and paper.
In the 17th and 18th centuries paper filigree moved beyond the religious houses but was still largely limited to the more affluent in society due to the scarcity of paper. The more affluent young women in society however could learn the art at some finishing schools and would do this in their spare time and it is mentioned by Jane Austen in her book Sense and Sensibility from 1811.
After the Victorian era however the popularity of paper quilling started to wane and did not revive interest again until about the 1960's or 70's and in particular the 21st century.

Some Basic Quilling Tips
A collection of tips to help improve your quilling
2. Only use a needle tool to create tight circles as the slotted tool creates a bent section in the middle of the circle which is not as even as a nice small hole created by the needle tool.
3. Tweezers are not necessary but they are great tools for handling fine quilling work
4. If you want to increase the strength of your paper quilling then apply varnish to the finished piece.
5. Make your own quilling board by gluing different size washers to a piece of cardboard.
