The Tradition Behind Quilt Bedding

Ranked #28,691 in Home & Garden, #533,068 overall

Since the earliest settlers started inhabiting our lands, quilting has been present. Steeped in tradition and technique, this interest was deeply needed due to the bitter winters, particularly the northeast United States. To keep warm folks needed to contrive new and innovative ways to keep a family healthy. Quilt bedding was the answer.

The winter nights were particularly uncomfortable and the making of quilt bedding was soon inevitable. This warm material to cover with at night made the crafted blankets extremely popular.

Material for the quilt was at first very hard to get and could be quite costly. Typical families just starting out in new plantations, towns and settlements could barely afford to live let alone splurge on imported, overseas materials. Even if they could come by the means, boats arriving from Europe were rare and seldom carried enough to accommodate.

Quilting Creations

Therefore it was necessary for all families to salvage and conserve any small scrap of fabric that they got their hands on. It was not uncommon for families to have small tubs full of discarded materials in storage somewhere.

When enough material collected they were sewn together in larger pieces called sheet or blocks. This was not an act of boredom or an idle hobby. These quilts were much needed and as soon as they were completed they went to member of the family who was most in need of it. This was often the youngest or oldest in the home.

Quilting was traditionally done by the women of the household. The act of making quilts was often communal event where women of all ages in a town would gather and sew their creations. Almost immediately the love and care was evident in the beautiful appearance of these quilts.

Quilting Made For A Variety Of Events

Later, quilts were often created to make note of significant life event; such as marriage. Wedding quilts continue to be made today. Quilts, an ideal bedding gift, was often given to newly married couples.

Quilts were often made for other events as well. When people were preparing to leave a community they were often presented with the creations to aid in their travels and use in the making of their new home. Pastors were often given quilts by community groups when assigned to a new parish or location.

Quilting In Today's World

The signature quilt is a fun and unique way of raising funds for many causes or needs. A communal blanket is created and people can buy space to have their names embroidered on the fabric.

Since the earliest days of North America, quilting has been a meaningful occurrence. These blankets provide warmth and love. Sleeping on quilted bedspread is still one of the most comfortable ways to spend a night because one can be sure of the amount of time and care went into the creation of the covering.
