Everything You Need to Make Your Quilt - Building Your Stash

One of the most important things for any Crafter, and especially a Quilter, is their 'Stash'.  What is the 'Stash' - well it's all those glorious pieces of fabric that you can't resist, the threads, the tools, the stencils, the quilt racks, the cutters, the quilting machines .... need I go on?

Building your stash is critical - it means that when the creative urge strikes, or that brilliant idea pops up you have everything you need to hand so that you can start your project while the picture is fresh in your mind and the creative juices are flowing.  The quilt and cushions in the photo came from all the bits of pink and cream I had collected and stored in my stash boxes.

This lens is here to provide you with access to all the goodies you need to build that stash.  If I've missed any good resources that you know about leave a message in the Guest Book and I'll add them to the list.

Quilting Fabric

All those luscious fabrics that make your mouth water - Some start with a pattern, but for it is always the fabric, the colors and textures start the ideas and I go on from there. One of the best sources of fabrics is eBay, and you often find fabrics that are ready cut if you just want simple shapes. Saves no end of time and you can get straight to the interesting bit, the sewing.

Quilting and Patchwork Magazines

Keep up to date with new techniques, patterns and what's happening in the Quilting World. I tend to prefer magazines rather than books for ideas, they are more 'up to the moment' with colors and fabrics, not to mention some excellent patterns. i particularly like the Australian magazines, they have some really unusual ideas

More Quilting and Patchwork Magazines

Back issues of old magazines are often available on ebay and they are a real bargain. You can pick them up for a very small amount of money normally, and they are a rich source of inspiration.

Quilting Technique Books

I use magazines for inspiration but when I want technique advice i turn to my books. The basic skills don't change and it is good to have a handy reference book or two around when I want to remind myself of something.

Rotary Cutters and Cutting Mats

Once the fabric is bought, and the pattern is chosen the next job is cutting out the fabric. The easiest way to cut the large pieces down accurately for piecing is to use a Rotary Cutter. it takes a little practice, but once you have mastered the art, you'll rotary cut everything!

More Cutters and Mats

Cutting Mats are essential - if you can get your hands on a cutting table - and you have space for it - that makes life so much easier. I like some of the quilts that are especially designed for rotary cut patterns. these can be very quick to make if you are in a hurry.

Quilting Templates

Templates to make your cutting easier and get the most out of your fabric - no quilter likes to waste that precious stuff! It is worth investing in good non-slip templates made from good quality materials as they will make accurate cutting much easier. Any quilter will tell you that accurately cut pieces make much better quilts.

More Quilting Templates

You can get some excellent quilt template bargains on ebay, but do check they are in good condition and haven't been damaged - they will be unusable if they are not perfect.

Sewing Machines For Quilters

Accurate piecing is essential for a good quilt. Occasionally I piece by hand, but more often than not I use a machine. I prefer to quilt by hand so getting this bit out of the way quickly and accurately is a great help.

More Sewing Machines

Again ebay is a good source of bargains for sewing machines, but do check them out thoroughly before buying.

Quilting Frames

It's far better if you can keep your work slightly stretched when you are quilting - gives a much better finish. I hand quilt all of my work and a good frame is essential, not only for the quality of the quilting, but also it makes it a great deal easier on the back, neck and eyes. A good frame is worth it's weight in gold. I have a smallish lap frame and a larger floor standing one for bigger projects.
