About Quilting - A Needlework Technique
Quilting is the needlework process of layering two, or more, pieces of fabric on top of each other and sewing them together, either by hand or with a sewing machine, to form a quilt. This form of needlework has been popular through the ages. Many patterns are available for beautiful quilts and we have added some links to patterns on other websites with information about this needlework.

TODAY'S QUILTING
Modern quilting
Those of us who love quilts are so lucky to live in a time when technology has given us so many great tools. Beautiful fabrics are available at your local crafts store, fabric store and discount retailer, allowing people at all budgetary levels to make beautiful quilts.
The sewing machines available today are better than ever, and many machines are designed with the special needs of quilters in mind, coming with extra feet that make machine quilting easier.
And there are so many patterns to choose from, from the multitudes of old favorites to new designs being dreamed up every day. Some quitters even work with fabric like a painter works with paint on a canvas, making one-of-a-kind designs that are nothing less than stunning works of art.

HOW TO QUILT
The Six Steps to Making a Quilt
Traditional quilting is a six-step process that includes: 1) selecting a pattern, fabrics and batting; 2) measuring and cutting fabrics to the correct size to make blocks from the pattern; 3) piecing (sewing cut pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine or by hand to make blocks) blocks together to make a finished "top"; 4) layering the quilt top with batting and backing, to make a "quilt sandwich"; 5) quilting by hand or machine through all layers of the quilt sandwich; and 6) squaring up and trimming excess batting from the edges, machine sewing the binding to the front edges of the quilt and then hand-stitching the binding to the quilt backing.
