Shortcut- Jelly Rolls !

Try using a JELLY ROLL of fabric.

Jelly Rolls are already cut into 2.5" strips.
40 strips would be 100", just short of 3 yards(108"), or 12 fat quarters.

Cutting the Fabric Strips

Cut each of the 12 fat quarters (18" X 21") into 4 strips , measuring 3",4",5",& 6" wide by 21" long.

Then shuffle the colors/patterns and create stacks of 4 strips, one of each size, using 4 different colors/patterns. Make sure no two stacks are exactly the same combination.

Sew each stack of 4 together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. The new pieces will now be 17" by 21".

Cut each new piece into 2" strips, each strip will contain the 4 colors/patterns of the piece.

Create the underlining

Cut out pattern pieces using muslin or some other cotton material. Cut out pattern pieces for optional lining.

OR

Cut your sweatshirt down the center front and sides. Cut off sleeves at shoulders and cut open along inside length. This will leave you with 5 pieces, right front, left front,2 sleeves, and back. Trim off any edging fabric.
Use these 5 pieces as templates to cut out any optional lining pieces.

Add the strips

Cover all the pattern pieces with the strips.

1. Start by pinning a strip to the center of the back.

2. Place a second strip on top of the center strip, right sides together. Sew a 1/4" seam down one side of strips, through all 3 pieces (2 strips and backing). Unfold the top strip out onto backing and iron.

3. Place another strip on the center strip, but sew down the other side of the strips this time. Unfold and iron.

4. Continue to add strips until the entire back is covered.

5. Trim the excess of the strips down to the original pattern outline.

6. Cover the fronts and sleeves the same way.

Fabri-Quilt pre-quilted on eBay

I made this same jacket pattern using pre-quilted fabric.
Just trim the seams and press, no need for lining, except maybe on the arms if you want to roll the cuffs up.
If you machine stitch it, you can make it in a day.

Stitch the Jacket together

1. Stitch the fronts of the jacket to the back at the shoulders and side seams. Use 1/2" seam allowance.

2. Stitch the sleeves together and attach to the shoulders.

3. Assemble the optional lining the same way.

4. Iron the seams open.

(I made this same jacket using pre-quilted material, and all I had to do was cut out the pattern, stitch it together, and add binding! Extremely simple, didn't even need lining!I did add some lining half way up the sleeve so when I turn the cuffs back it had a cute coordinated pattern. Since my pattern had no collar, I made a cute coordinating neckerchief).

Button Loops

You can add optional button loops .

1. Cut out a 2" X 20" strip of material.
2. Fold the material along center line and press.
3. Unfold, then fold each side in to meet along the center line, and fold in again. This makes it 1/4 it's original width. Top stitch the edge together.
4. Cut this strip in 4ths.
5. Fold each strip over to form a loop.
6. Pin each loop where you want it along the jacket fron edge.

Binding

1. Cut the 2 binding fat quarters into 2" strips. Attach the strips into one long strip by placing face sides together and stitching along the diagonal.

2. Place binding on edge of jacket, face sides together, and stitch 1/2" along the seamline.

3. (OPTIONAL)Insert jacket lining into jacket, wrong sides together.

4. Fold binding over edge to back side. Fold binding under about 1/2" and press. Hand stitch along seam line to close.

If you have left over fabric, make a matching bag....
