My Story

Why I Quit Drinking Without 12 Step Groups

I have been sober for a few years now and I did it without 12 step groups. I have attended many, some on my own, and some because the court system made me. When it is not your choice it is kind of hard to get into. I am not one to speak up in groups either, I can be pretty shy. So when I would be at these meetings I actually felt more anxiety than anything which in turn would cause me to not want to feel that and want to drink or use. All the "war" stories in these groups would just trigger cravings and In turn cause me to have thoughts I was trying to rid myself of. These groups were triggers for me. And I never liked the thought of having to attend a meeting every week for the rest of my life in order to quit. I am living proof that AA and NA is not the only way and you can quit drinking without 12 step groups.

Everything You Know About Addiction Treatment Is Wrong

Why You Can Quit Drinking Without A 12 Step Group

I can safely make that statement to most people-- plus an alarmingly large number of health professionals-- without fear of being contradicted. Why? Because most people know very little about addiction, and what they do know (or think they know) boils down to this: addicts can quit if they really want to; all they have to do is commit wholeheartedly to their treatment, which consists largely of "talking therapy" -- individual or goup psychotherapy or 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous.
That is the sum total of most peoples knowledge of addiction treatment. But it's dead wrong. And it's the main reason that the success rate for addiction treatment is currently only 20-30percent! That means that 70-80 percent of the participants in any given addiction treatment program are not going to be successful. No wonder people think that alcohol or drug treatment doesn't work!
I'm here to tell you that you no longer have to feel helpless or hopless. There is hope and you can do it!
