On January 11, 1964, the United States Surgeon General released a 387 page report linking smoking with emphysema, lung cancer, and other serious diseases. However why do millions of persons continue to smoke despite the overwhelming evidence that it is damaging to your health? Why do so many express a desire to quit, yet keep right on smoking?

The answers to these questions can only be answered by each individual. Not every smoker has an extremely difficult time quitting. I am sure that you have heard of people who actually just decided to throw the cigarettes away and never pick up another one. Some feel no discomfort or any craving! . However on the other end of the spectrum as one man explained, "Cleansing my body of nicotine was a indescibably difficult ordeal. With knots in my chest, and times it was so severe I thought I might die".

Which one of these examples can you relate to. The underlying factor whether it was easy or hard, the person had a plan or a strategy of wanting to stop.
This is very important because if you are going to win the battle against smoking, a plan must be implemented!

To stop smoking a person must have the will to stop smoking.Without this determination no antismoking remedy will succeed. The major element of success or failure is a person willpower. But how does a person develop the will to stop?

For some fear of dying works, and in reality this is real justifable reason to stop smoking. For some thinking about the damage it does to the body works.

It is most damaging thus many have friends that help in their will to quit. Supportive friends especially those who have quit themselves can be a source of inspiration.

What is the best way to stop? Reduce the number of cigarettes this enables one to gradually quit. Or you can just set a date and stop abruptly on that date. The later way requires a great deal of will power. Back in 1981 a man said "the first few days was the most difficult". He decided to put $2.00 into a coffee can - the money he had previously spent on cigarettes. He figured in 12 months it would be more than $700.00 a substantial savings. It would give him a fresh start! with money in his pocket.

Many have quit for a week and then backslide into a relapse. It is important to keep oral substitutes handy, raisins, nuts, celery sticks, chewing gum. Drink plenty of fluids, vegetable juice etc. Get plenty of exercise and plenty of rest,with fixed determinatin & will power if you really want to you can stop smoking.
