I love Asterix comic books by Gossiny and Uderzo. I read them all when I was a kid. And recently took a trip back in time and read the entire collection again. I realized now that these are ok for kids, but much funnier for grown-ups because you get to understand all the historical jokes and the amazing word play in them.
Asterix and the banquet ("Le tour de Gaule d"Asterix" , in reference to le tour de France) gave me the idea for this French food quiz.
In this book, Julius Caesar has enough of being ridiculed by this indomitable Gaul tribe so he barricades them in their village. Asterix and Obelix, the heroes of these stories, decide to show Caesar that Gaul belongs to the Gauls and that they can go everywhere as they please. So they make a bet with the Romans: they will bring food specialties from around the country as proof. Read the book if you want to know how it ends!

What is a Tartiflette?

What is a Tartiflette?: it is a gratin of reblochon cheese, potatoes, onions, cream and bacon. Artery clogging and absolutely delicious. Not difficult to make either. Tartiflette is a traditional and classic dish of Savoyard cuisine. I make tartiflette at home pretty often, but I do my own "lazy and too busy" version. The proper recipe is cooked in the oven, I do mine in a skillet. And no, there is no "light" version of the tartiflette, thank Teutates!

- Prep Time: 20
- Total Time: 40
In France we use what they call "lardons": it is like bacon strips but very thick and cut in small pieces. I do not like lardons because I just cannot seem to get use to the non-crispy texture of it. Very difficult to get crispy lardons. Lardons are used in all kind of recipes from pizzas and quiches to the tartiflette.
So in my own version of the tartiflette I use bacon strips (you can find bacon strips in French's supermarket, it is just not that popular with the locals). And being Canadian, I know how our yummy maple flavored Canadian bacon is, but please not with this recipe!
Also, Reblochon is a raw milk cheese. You will not find that if you live in the USA. But you can find reblochon-like cheese. It should be close enough to make a good tartiflette. Here's 2: French Cheese Merlemont Reblochon or Le Delice du Jura - Reblochon-style Tomme
I rarely use recipes and almost always cook "au pif" as we say in French. It means that I go approximately with the ingredients. So, the recipe I give here is approximately what I use. Since Tartiflette is not pastry, there is no way you can go wrong.
Ingredients
- Potatoes (a type that will stay firm after being cook): 500 grams
- bacon:100 grams
- butter about 2 tablespoon
- onion:1 medium
- Reblochon cheese: 250 grams
- fresh cream: a big spalt...the more the bettre! but let say about 2 tablespoon
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1-Cook your potatoes, they should stay firm, so not too long!
2-While your potatoes are boiling, cook your bacon strips (you can do this in a microwave). I like mine crispy, but you do as you like.
2- Meanwhile, chop your onion, not to fine and cut your Reblochon cheese in cubes.Set aside
4-In a pan, sauté the onions in butter until well browned. Peel the potatoes (you can keep the skin if you like). Slice them in thick slices and add them to the pan. Sauté the potatoes until they get a little color. Reduce heat and add the thick cream, cooked bacon and the cheese, salt and pepper.
5-Mix a bit and let this cook until the cheese melt.
6-serve

Martin Pouret is the last maker to produce real traditional Orleans vinegar. He makes vinegar entirely in wood barrels, a long process that results in excellent, high quality vinegar. I always buy this brand. I love either their walnut vinegar (really good on a green salad) or their raspberry vinegar (mix it with some mayonnaise for an excellent coleslaw sauce).

What is the name of the famous cake, specialty of Douarnenez in Bretagne region?: It's call a kouing-aman. My all time favorite sweet. It's a dough with butter and more butter and sugar and more sugar and a bit more butter, slowly baked until the kouing-aman caramelizes. Kouing-aman is the Breton word for butter cake.
The Kig Ha Farz are buckwheat dumpling (another Bretagne specialty). The clafoutis is a cherry cake from Limousin region, and Paris-Brest is a choux pastry with praline cream.

In 1955, during the shooting of "Et dieu créa la femme" movie in St-Tropez, she indulged herself with what was just called cream cakes. She liked it very much, and rumor wants that she suggest the name "tarte Tropezienne" to the chef who inventetd this cream cake. The rest is history: the movie was an international success, making Bardot a superstar, putting St-Tropez on the map. The Tropezienne tart became St-Tropez staple dessert .

I always keep duck fat in the fridge, so whenever I feel like it I can do my Sarladaise potatoes express version. Gratin Dauphinois is another classic French recipe: in an oven dish, rubbed with garlic, you slowly cook thinly sliced potatoes mixed with lots of cream.

How do you call the famous cheesecake, specialty of Poitou region?: Tourteau. It's a cake made with goat cheese, sugar, flour and egg yolks. You recognize it by its burned-like charcoal colored top. I love tourteau. You can have them as aperitif as well as dessert. Personally I love them at apero time.

- I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Did quite well in the first one. I've been to France so many times in the past (vacation with my parents and later on with hubby and kids) I love Douarnenez, one of the most beautiful little cities in Bretagne. First time I ate pancakes that weren't sweet. I chose one with mushrooms, yummi. On vacation with the boyfriend (later my hubby) and my dad, must have been more then 40 years ago. From where I live now, France is only 1,5 -2 hours drive away.

- Lol I knew that I was not going to do well on that quiz. I did discover something unique though...the tartiflette recipe is much like a potato pie recipe which my daughter makes. French food recipes have crossed the borders and we did not even know it ;)

- I averaged 8 on the quiz. I should have called on my husband for help. He lived in France for a while and could probably have aced the quiz. He tells me often "The French have the BEST pastries and bread!" I'm going to try making the The Tarte tropézienne pie tomorrow. I wish that you would have included the recipe but I'm sure that I will find it online.

- Very fun lens!. I love the way it is set up - - first with that quiz (which I failed miserably, lol), then with the fun stories behind the correct answers. Very nice, and bon appétit! (Think I will try that tartiflette recipe as soon as it gets cooler out!)

- To be honest I don't know how they stay thin and healthy but it works, since I moved to France I eat cream, cheese and butter EVERYDAY (and I mean every single day), well I am dropping pounds. I think it is because eating fatter food, curb the cravings, and you eat less plus you eat "real" natural food, unprocessed. They also eat lots of fruits and veggies. They eat cheese after the main dish, so there is no room left for sweets after that lol.
