Hawaii Five-0's Alex O'Loughlin
O'Loughlin's performances in Moonlight and Hawaii Five-0 spurred me to seek out the rest of his work, and I discovered that this talented actor has a lot of range. He has shown his flair for comedy as an oyster farmer and (opposite JLo) a cheese farmer, played a gritty cop in The Shield, and a life-giving transplant surgeon in Three Rivers. In The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant he struggled to survive the crushing existence of Australia's Botany Bay colony; in Feed he introduced us to the perverse and shocking world of feeders and gainers. As a serial killer in Criminal Minds, he managed to be both creepy and sympathetic. No matter what role he's playing, he immerses himself wholeheartedly in the character -- even doing many of his own stunts.

Alex O'Loughlin: Should He Play 007?

It's always tricky seeing favorite books or series made into movies, but some seem to lend themselves to it. I'm a fan of the futuristic detective novels of J.D. Robb and admit that I'd love to see Alex O'Loughlin in the role of brooding, sexy, Roarke. It might be awhile before anyone decides to make those books into movies, however.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking it's about time for another James Bond movie. Alex was considered for the role several years ago, but he may have been a bit young for the role. What about now? Would he be the best choice to play 007 in the next film? Please share your opinion.
When Alex was comprehensively tested for the role about 7 years ago, casting director Jane Jenkins had this to say: ...Alex is a terrifically sexy, masterful, and take-charge guy - just the type who can make you remember that James Bond is a seriously dangerous man.. Alex O'Loughlin has been in numerous film and tv projects, some of which are better known than others. If you are a fan of Alex's from a particular vehicle (Moonlight, for instance... or the new Hawaii Five-0), you might not be aware of some of his earlier work. Included here are video montages from The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant and Oyster Farmer, in which he does spectacular work and that I highly recommend. Also included is an interview of Alex discussing the movie Feed, which he developed and in which he starred. A video montage from Moonlight showcases a pivotal sequence of events in the series. In 2007, when Moonlight was presented to CBS, the series was called Twilight. It also featured a completely different cast, with the exception of Alex. Here's the original (unaired) short pilot episode.

Steve McGarrett: Too Isolated?
In the series opener of Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett (played by Alex O'Loughlin) suffered the violent death of his father. In subsequent episodes, he learned that his mother's death was murder, and not an accident as he had believed. His reunion with his estranged younger sister was cut short just when they were starting to reconnect, because she's in danger. So, at the moment, Alex's character is left with no personal support system and few ways to expand his personal story.
With no family and limited personal relationships, is the McGarrett character too isolated? Being a loner is part of his identity, but is this being carried to such an extreme that it will limit character growth and development?

Well...The Book Moonlight Was Based On
Newly released: Angel of Vengeance, the book on which the series Moonlight was based. Although the protagonist is named Mick Angel and the storylines diverge somewhat, this book is generating a lot of positive reviews -- both as another facet of Moonlight and as a stand-alone novel. If you are fan of the Moonlight series, which starred Alex O'Loughlin, (or even if you weren't) you will want to grab this book.
