- Excellent quiz, and I appreciate the way you explained the answers. Even if I didn't do too well on the quiz, now I've learned something new.

- There was a fun Facebook app a ways back that asked how Dutch are you? and I scored better on that! I am originally from Upstate NY. My hometown (http://www.squidoo.com/14589/-knows-14589) is home to many people of Dutch ancestry as you can tell from our town logo and a quick look through the phonebook. I was struck when I visited Holland how like the Dutch countryside that region is which is probably why so many Dutch settled there originally.

Answers
From which Dutch city did the ships from the Holland America Line (H.A.L.) depart for Ellis Island?
The ships from the H.A.L. left from the Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam. See The Ellis Island Era. Hamburg is in Germany, Utrecht is not a harbour city, and though Amsterdam was an important harbour city, the ships from the H.A.L. did not depart from there.
Which major city is missing from Genlias, the Dutch BMD database?
Find the answer on How to trace your Dutch roots online. You can find marriage and death records of Utrecht in Genlias. Amsterdam and Den Haag only have a few records in Genlias, but Rotterdam is not represented at all.
Which country was the most popular destination for Dutch emigrants in the years after the second world war?
Re-read Post-war emigration if you had this one wrong. All countries mentioned were common emigration destinations, but Canada was the most popular at the time.
The city Pella in Iowa was founded in 1847 by Dutch immigrants. Who was the founder of Pella?
You could know the answer if you had read Albertus van Raalte and the secessionists. The correct answer is Scholte. Hendrik de Cock started the secession from the Dutch Reformed church. Albertus van Raalte lead the first group of secessionists that emigrated to the USA, and founded Holland in Michigan. Hendrik Scholte followed a few years later and founded Pella. Robert Swierenga has written many books about the history of the Dutch in America, but he did not found any cities.
Suppose your ancestors are Johannes Antoni and Neeltje van Aalst. You find their immigration record and discover that they arrived at Ellis Island in 1911. Their record also states that Johannes Antoni was 35 and born in Herwijnen, and Neeltje was 32 and born in Zaltbommel. You want to trace them into The Netherlands. What do you do?
Read How to trace your Dutch roots online to find out that your starting point should be the Genlias website. You could also search Google and discover I already did the work for you.
