Quiz: Fictional Female Detectives--who do you know?

Ranked #6,100 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #220,313 overall | Donates to Room to Read

Are you a know-it-all when it comes to fictional girl detectives?

I used to think I had read most of the good girl detective fiction books. Sue Grafton's Alphabet Mysteries, Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta (oops - there is a hint to one question), even Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series can count as a mystery book.

Lucky for me, there are so many fictional female detectives out there that I will never run out of a good "next read"!

Take my 10 question quiz and see if you have read enough girl detective fiction! Or, perhaps you will find a new author. Go on, I dare ya to test yourself!

One of my favorite female detective series--

The Tess Monaghan Series written by Laura Lippman:

Ms. Lippman is probably one of my very favorite fiction authors. She writes a mystery series featuring the fictional female detective Tess Monaghan . Tess' home turf is Baltimore, MD. Since I have visited this city on vacation, I have a frame of reference for the setting--meaning I can picture some of the places in my head.

I would recommend that you read the books in order. It is not absolutely necessary, but it helps understand what is going on in Tess' life that is not related to the mystery being solved. In other words, Tess has a life outside of work and Ms. Lippman does a bang up job developing characters.

The following list is generated by Amazon, so the books are not in the order written. The first book in the Tess Monaghan series is Baltimore Blues . If you would like a list, please visit my "Laura Lippman and Tess Monaghan: women detecting" page.

Want more female detective book suggestions?

(some lady sleuths not mentioned in the quiz)

Yes, I know I have left out several authors and their female detective characters. I have not read everything, so please excuse my omissions. As a follow up, here is a list that I am sure will be growing. Find a new author and a new series by browsing the list below.
  1. Detective Agatha RaisinFemale Detective Agatha Raisin This "cozy mystery" series is created by M.C. Beaton who also writes the Hamish MacBeth series. My husband enjoys listening to the audio versions of the Agatha Raisin mystery novels.
  2. Please do not ignore Botswana's No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency's Precious Ramotswe. I particularly love the HBO series based on this wonderful series.

I love a good detective story:

and not just the ones with lady detectives, either!

By far my favorite genre is the "mystery novel". I began reading mysteries when I was a teenager visiting my grandmother during summer vacations. She had a collection of books that had belonged to my mom. That collection had several Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy books as well as novels by Ellery Queenmystery authors and novels.

Below you will find a short list of some of my other "mystery" pages here on Squidoo.

I did terribly, I'm afraid, even though I love Miss Marple. But you have missed some corkers - Agatha Raisin, Sister Fidelma, and the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. How about a sequel?
