Guess what Norma I did really well, it might have something to do with the fact that I live here. I loved the quiz
  • whiteskyline Dec 18, 2011 @ 1:16 am | delete
I picked kangaroo, that was a close one. Is rugby the same as Australian rules? I chose AFL thinking that was oz rules, but would not have guessed cricket. Got the rest right though :)
  • Oosquid Oct 12, 2011 @ 10:48 am | delete
I knew more about 'down under' than I thought I did.
  • Sylvestermouse Jun 9, 2011 @ 7:51 am | delete
LOL! I knew this one would be tricky for me. I really do not know how Australia is governed. Wait, I take that back, before I took the quiz, I didn't know how Australia was governed :)
  • pimbels Jun 5, 2011 @ 8:08 am | delete
    60%. Great fun
  • cstronner May 17, 2011 @ 6:22 am | delete

    Got 8/10.

    7/10
  • sorana Apr 20, 2011 @ 7:46 am | delete
9/10. I am still not convinced that cricket is the official national sport. I think AFL should be. :)
  • Serbian Apr 15, 2011 @ 2:17 pm | delete
    9 out of 10..What can I say :)
  • Margo_Arrowsmith Apr 10, 2011 @ 1:27 pm | delete
    Very well
  • JoanneOtt Apr 6, 2011 @ 9:19 pm | delete
9 out of ten. I was wrong about your most famous beach.
  • LKW31 Jan 4, 2011 @ 5:30 am | delete
I aced it, perfect score! Yaaaay!
  • careergirl Jan 4, 2011 @ 2:55 am | delete
I got 8. I figure Kangaroo would be the most popular animal, and it wasn't until I hit the button that I then saw the 'all of the above option'. All of them are native to Australia.
  • Tipi Dec 19, 2010 @ 9:59 pm | delete
I must have had test anxiety, kept changing answers and ended up wrong. Very well done!
  • Tipi Dec 19, 2010 @ 9:50 pm | delete
If I did it again, I would do perfectly!
  • emerald125 Nov 30, 2010 @ 6:52 pm | delete
I agree with a previous comment Australia is a democracy (and part of the commonwealth) I would alter that question a little to avoid confusion. Cricket is not the most played sport either... so I would change that one too :-)

Some of the Wildlife

They are tamed by food

In parks, around beaches and gold courses, and so on much of the wildlife is tame and they treat humans with respect, unless they are injured or threatened.

At Pebbly Beach, NSW, the kangaroos will even come and sit on your legs when you stretch out on the ground. Small ones are OK but the big ones are rather heavy. They love bread and are passionate about visitors. My son, Andrew, was captivated by them when we visited the beach some time ago.

Andrew and roos, Pebbly Beach, NSW

There are many great places for holidays and we favored Forster, on the mid NSW coast. It was when we were packing the car to go there that I lifted the blanket in the boot which looked a bit suspicious as it was moving. To my great surprise, Boss, our dog had jumped in and was hiding so that we would take him with us. He knew he was going to be left behind as it had happened before but, due to the wildlife and people where we were headed no dogs were allowed. Sorry boss, maybe next time

Baby Koala

Lost its mother

Wild life carers and rangers do a fantastic job in rescuing and saving wild life in this country. Here a baby koala is being tended to before it is big enough to survive on its own. These are unique animals and although called Koala bears they are not related to the bear species of animal. Their closest relative is the wombat.

Koalas live in gum trees and the leaves (poisonous to all other animals) is their only food source. They are marsupials and the babies, usually only one at a time, are no bigger than a grub when born, Despite their size they crawl up the fur to the pouch where they become fused on a nipple. Once they leave the pouch they cling tentatively to the mother's fur, on her back. Here they learn to eat leaves and get lessons in safety, survival, and other things.

If a mother koala is killed, usually by dogs or cars, the baby is helpless. The little one in the video is a case in point. It could be 6 months or more before it is able to be introduced to the wild.

Caring for the wildlife is something Australian's take very seriously. The highways have notice boards with wildlife protection ads and phone numbers to report injured animals every few miles. Many kangaroos killed on the road have joeys in their pouch and their survival depends on the timing of getting to the scene quickly. They can survive for only a few hours under normal circumstances.

12. Which of the following are not marsupials

13. Which birds do not fly?

14. Which animal is native to Australia?

15. Where would you find a Tasmanian Tiger?

Take Care if You Visit

Some of the more serious sides to the place

Tourists are often at risk from the wildlife. Because the animals look placid and many are photographed with the more iconic ones visitors are often warned against approaching them as they are wild. These animals are mainly protected and they do have a mind of their own about who should and can invade their territory.

Kangaroos are extremely unreliable and have some great fighting tactics. The most prominent is the lifting of their back legs and kicking off their opponents while balancing on their tail. Their front paws are capable of delivering some pretty deep scratches and they also bite. The wild roo is to be avoided at all costs.

Animals that are in enclosures or parks are better, but you still should not tempt them too much.

Emus love to steal your food and you don't have much of a say if they want it. The best idea is to give in and escape. While reasonably safe they can deliver a mighty blow with their wings and their beaks if they have a mind to. It is a unique animal in that the father builds the mound into which the female lays her eggs, These mounds are at exactly the right temperature to hatch the eggs and the father is the protector. He fights with vigor anyone or anything that threatens his brood. By this time the female is off to mate again and forgets about the offspring.

When the babies hatch out the father takes them under his wings and guides them through the first few weeks of their lives. They are dependent on him for food, protection and comfort.

These animals can reach 80 miles per hour (130 kph) in a run, They can survive for some time without water and are great desert dwellers but when times are tough they will come into cities and towns and make their presence felt.

I've never been there, but always thought I should go at some point in my life - I am not so well travelled yet. I've never seen a Kangaroo for real, but they have Wallaby's and Emu's in London Zoo. I got 0% in the geographic questions - I'd have thought I'd get at least one right through chance..
  • Irenemaria Feb 8, 2012 @ 2:09 pm | delete

I loved the Quiz Norma, the question on Broken Hill well I was born there, I know what you mean about Forster, a great place to holiday, I use to live at a place called Stokers Siding and I would go into Byron Bay when I had time off work and the one thing that was always said to me while dining at Byron was god you Aussies have it good. Byron as you would be aware attracts people from all over the world and they couldn't rave about Australia enough. You can sense your pride in this lens and you know what it will do, it will bring people to Australia for holidays.

About Me - What you might like to know

Well, perhaps its more about where I live

We came to Canberra, the capital city of Australia, in 1984 and now we would not live anywhere else. It is surrounded on one side by the beautiful Brindabella Mountain Range, and the Namadjeri National Park. It is an alpine area and only a two hour drive from Mount Kosciusko where the ski resorts for NSW are located.

It has a population of around 380,000 and houses the National Parliament within its precincts.

I am a writer and artist and love the colors and scenery, as well as the wild life in the great Australian bush. We often get some rather stunning animals and birds in our gardens. The trees are magnificent and the autumn is the best time of year.
