The Weather

Is that rainy reputation fact or fiction?

Seattle has what is called a temperate marine climate. Its location near the Pacific coast and between two mountain ranges, the Olympics and the Cascades, makes the winters mild and the summers cool.

The Olympic Mountains and the 100 mile distance from the Pacific Ocean keep the level of rainfall much lower than places on the coast, but the clouds stack up against the Cascades to the east which creates a lot of overcast, gray days with intermittent drizzle. The average rainfall is only about 36 inches per year.

It's the Space Needle, right?

The Space Needle Dominates the Seattle Skyline

Looks can be deceiving. The Space Needle is NOT Seattle's tallest building. The Space Needle is located at the Seattle Center which is a couple of miles away from the "downtown" area where all of the other tall buildings are located. The Space Needle appears to be the tallest building in photos because the best places to take photos of the Seattle skyline including the Space Needle are from vantage points that put the Space Needle in the foreground making it appear taller than all of the other buildings.

The Space Needle is actually the 6th tallest building in Seattle, WA:

1. Columbia Center - 937 feet
2. 1201 Third Ave. (formerly the Washington Mutual Tower) - 772 feet
3. Two Union Square - 740 feet
4. Seattle Municipal Tower - 722 feet
5. Safeco Plaza (1001 4th avenue)- 630 feet
6. Space Needle - 605 feet

The Montlake Cut is a canal that was created between Lake Washington and Lake Union to make it possible for boats to move between the two lakes. Another canal was dug between Lake Union and Salmon Bay. Salmon Bay was originally part of Puget Sound. Since Puget Sound is approximately 22 feet lower than the lakes, the Hiram Chittenden (aka Ballard) Locks was built to accomodate marine traffic between the lakes and the sound.
