The Weather
Is that rainy reputation fact or fiction?
Seattle has what is called a temperate marine climate. Its location near the Pacific coast and between two mountain ranges, the Olympics and the Cascades, makes the winters mild and the summers cool.
The Olympic Mountains and the 100 mile distance from the Pacific Ocean keep the level of rainfall much lower than places on the coast, but the clouds stack up against the Cascades to the east which creates a lot of overcast, gray days with intermittent drizzle. The average rainfall is only about 36 inches per year.

Seattle's Tallest Building
It's the Space Needle, right?

Looks can be deceiving. The Space Needle is NOT Seattle's tallest building. The Space Needle is located at the Seattle Center which is a couple of miles away from the "downtown" area where all of the other tall buildings are located. The Space Needle appears to be the tallest building in photos because the best places to take photos of the Seattle skyline including the Space Needle are from vantage points that put the Space Needle in the foreground making it appear taller than all of the other buildings.
The Space Needle is actually the 6th tallest building in Seattle, WA:
1. Columbia Center - 937 feet
2. 1201 Third Ave. (formerly the Washington Mutual Tower) - 772 feet
3. Two Union Square - 740 feet
4. Seattle Municipal Tower - 722 feet
5. Safeco Plaza (1001 4th avenue)- 630 feet
6. Space Needle - 605 feet

The Fremont Troll was the winning design in a contest to create a public art object for the neglected space under the Aurora Bridge at N 35th St & Troll Ave N in the Fremont neighborhood. The contest was sponsored by the Fremont Arts Council in 1990. The troll was sculpted and built later that year by four local artists: Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter, and Ross Whitehead. He is 18 feet tall high, weighs two tons (1814 kg), and is made of steel rebar, wire, and concrete. He holds a real volkswagen beetle in his left hand. Mummies on Display!
Where would you find a Mummy?
You would think that if you wanted to see a mummy, the most logical place to find one would be in one of the numerous fine museums in Seattle. Oddly enough, none are on permanent display in any Seattle museum, but two can be found on display in Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, a unique little shop on pier 54 on the Seattle waterfront.

The Lake Washington Ship Canal

The Montlake Cut is a canal that was created between Lake Washington and Lake Union to make it possible for boats to move between the two lakes. Another canal was dug between Lake Union and Salmon Bay. Salmon Bay was originally part of Puget Sound. Since Puget Sound is approximately 22 feet lower than the lakes, the Hiram Chittenden (aka Ballard) Locks was built to accomodate marine traffic between the lakes and the sound.

Seattle Festivals!
Fun even if there is no sun!
Seattle crawls out of it's winter cocoon starting on Memorial Day Weekend with the annual Northwest Folklife Festival that celebrates the ethnic diversity of it's residents with music, folkdancing demonstrations, and foods from around the world. The fun continues throughout the summer, with the annual Bite of Seattle and the Seafair Celebration with street fairs, barbecues and parades in many communities. The Seafair celebration culminates in August with the annual hydroplane races on Lake Washington which often includes an aerial performance by the Blue Angels. The summer festival season ends with the annual Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival held over Labor Day weekend.
The celebrations and festivals continue through the end of the year with the Christmas Ships Festival. The parade of ships with lights and holiday decorations has been a Seattle tradition for over 60 years. Several large commercial sightseeing vessels lead the flotilla and include choirs singing Christmas carols on the deck. Anyone with a boat is welcome to decorate and join in . The boats travels along the various waterways for several weeks to the delight of people in communities along the shore.

- Awww man, I just god hosed on your mummies question -- but technically, I'm right, since the King Tut exhibit I completely missed at the MN science museum is coming to the Pacific Science Center, part of why my fiance and I decided to make Seattle our honeymoon destination! (Of course, I straight up failed a lot of the rest of the quiz -- guess I have some research to do before the big event!)
