Mega Solar System Quiz

The solar system is where we live, but how much do you really know about it? Are you aware of what is going on in the sun? Perhaps, but maybe not. Would you like to prove how much you know, and possibly learn something as you go.

This lens was written by a physicist who teaches astronomy as part of his college courses regularly.

The Sun

The sun is at the center of our solar system. It is a plasma sphere in which hydrogen is undergoing a fusion process to become helium, with energy being released. After a very long time, perhaps a million years, the energy travels from the reaction zone to the surface of the sun, and heads out into space.

Gaseous Giants

There are four gaseous giants. These planets have weather systems, many moons, and do have solid cores deep within. In fact, there may be liquid hydrogen around solid hydrogen. This conductive material allows the movement of charge, and results in magnetic fields.

All four gaseous giants have a ring system. Some rings were only recently discovered.
