The Best Historical Novel About The Wars of the Roses

Sharon Kay Penman is a gifted writer of historical fiction. No poorly researched bodice-rippers, professing to be historical because they use a few archaic terms ever spring from this author's pen. Sharon Kay Penman's books are like a course in history, but fun to read. The Sunne in Splendour deals with the era of The Wars of the Roses, and offers an alternative (and more realistic) view of Shakespeare's villainous King Richard III. If history is written by the victors, then perhaps this king deserves to be seen from another perspective than Shakespeare's. This wonderful book is not just about Richard, but about all the characters and the times of The Wars of the Roses. All of Penman's books are examples of historical fiction writing at its best, and this one is the best of the best.

Which Side Would You Be On?

York or Lancaster?

Serious students of history know that The Wars of the Roses stemmed (yes) from the ineffective King Richard II's being deposed by a cousin, Henry Bolingbroke (of the House of Lancaster).

50 or so years later, descendants of other cousins (the House of York) from the days of the deposed Richard II decided that their family had the better claim to the throne and pressed the issue. The result was Lancaster, who chose the red rose as their symbol, against York who wore the badge of the white rose. The Wars of the Roses!

Would you have been for Lancaster, or for York?

I'd be for Lancaster--red rose all the way!

Tipi says:

Neutral!

Tolovaj says:

Can't stand neutral position?

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

Well, I have cousins named Lancaster....

reasonablerobinson says:

Because I was born on that side of the Penines

No, York had the better claim. White rose for me!

flighty02 says:

As a Yorkshire lass myself it's only right that I go for the white rose!

Jess says:

I chose York purely because I like the white rose better - York always!!

siranthony says:

I say york, desendant of lionel of antwerp second in line to the throne after edward the black prince.

sousababy says:

Suppose I'll say York . . but I did poorly on the quiz, so I don't feel very qualified.

Victoria says:

My ancestors came from Wales, and so I theorize they were for Lancaster since the Tudors had friends there. However my spouse is from Yorkshire, and a proud Yorkshireman to boot. So I choose the White Rose as well.

Surprised myself in getting a creditable 9/10, I'm usually not that great at history... the duration of the wars let me down, who would have thought they went on for 30 years!
