History of the Soccer World Cup

Soccer also known as football has been around for a very long time.

The first World Cup only started many years after the game was born in the United Kingdom. The first international game was played in Scotland between and England. As it happened nothing happened and it was a scoreless draw. This occurred in 1872 and was rarely played outside the United Kingdom.

In 1884 the first international tournament was played known as the British Home Championship.

By the turn of the 20th century soccer had grown enough in popularity in other parts of the world that it was included in the 1900 summer Olympics as an demonstration sport.

1930 Soccer World Cup

The 1930 World Cup was divided up into 4 groups, but only group A had 4 teams playing. The other 3 groups had 3 teams. This was the only time the World Cup had 13 teams playing with only one other exception.

After winning there respective groups, Argentina, Yugoslavia, Uruguay and the United States played off in the Semi Finals.

The United States played Argentina in the first Semi Final and Uruguay played Yugoslavia in the second Semi Final. Funny enough both ended up with the same sore line Argentina and Uruguay winning 6:1.

Uruguay, as the host nation of the first World Cup, played Argentina on the 30th of July 1930 in front of a capacity crowed of 93000. Both teams met 2 years earlier in 1928 Olympics. By the way Uruguay won that game 2:1 in a replay.

One other interesting fact about the Final was the the teams could agree on the match ball. The result was that Argentina provided the match ball for one half and Uruguay the match ball for the other half.

Uruguay ended up winning the World Cup 4:2 after being behind 1:2 at half time.

Argentina didn't go away with nothing as Guillermo Stabile was the highest goal scorer in the World Cup with 8 goals.

1934 Soccer World Cup

In 1934 there were 16 teams in the tournament and the format changed to a knock out type of competition.

The other change came in form of teams having to qualify to make it to the final 16. In total 32 teams fought for qualification.

Uruguay as title holder decided not to compete in tournament, because a number of European teams didn't want to travel to South America 4 years earlier. This has been the only time so far that the title holder wasn't there to defend their title.

Argentina as runner up in 1930, got knocked out in the first round losing to Sweden 3:2.

In the end Italy, after beating Spain in a repeat game 1:0, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia made it to the Semi Finals.

Italy played Austria and won 1:0 to play in the Final.
Czechoslovakia played Germany and won 3:1 to get to the Finals.

After a scoreless first half Czechoslovakia took the lead with 14 minutes to go in the Final. Italy managed to equalized with only 9 minutes to go. It stayed that way after 90 minutes and extra time was required. Italy got in front 5 minutes into extra time and held on to win.

This made it 2 in a row for the host nation to win the title.

With 5 goals Oldrich Nejedly was the highest goal scorer in 1934

1938 Soccer World Cup

Controversy started the 1938 World Cup before it even started. In 1936 when it came to selecting the Host nation, France won the right to host the 1938 World Cup beating Argentina and Germany to it.

South Americans were outraged by this as it was thought the World Cup was going to be alternated between Europe and South America. As a consequence Uruguay and Argentina didn't enter the competition.
Spain was another nation not to enter the competition being effected by war.

Austria joined Germany and because Austria had qualified in it's own right the spot stayed empty and gave Sweden free pass into the 2nd round. Germany with some Austrian players included in their team lost to Switzerland ( 2:4 )in the first round in a game which needed to be replayed after a 1 all draw.
It was the only time Germany didn't reach the final 8 so far.

For the first time the title holder and the host didn't have to qualify for the tournament.

Italy, the current title holder, Brazil, Hungary and Sweden made it into the Semi Finals.

Italy played Brazil in the first Semi Final, beating them 2:1. In the other Semi Final, Hungary played Sweden and beaten them 5:1.

In the Final Italy took an early lead scoring in just the 6th minute. Hungary very quickly pulled that goal back in the 8th minute. With 2 more goals before half time Italy lead 3:1 at half time.

It took Hungry to the 70th minute to reduce the deficit to 3:2 only to see Italy score again in the 80th minute to defend it's title.

Leonidas from Brazil was the highest goal scorer with 7 goals.

1950 Soccer World Cup

The planned 1942 and 1946 World Cup Finals were cancelled due to the 2nd world war.

Due to the destruction of most of Europe, Brazil was chosen to host the 4th World Cup. There was numerous changes to the final 16 teams and only 13 ended up competing in the tournament.
This was the only other time after 1930 that less then 16 teams competed.

Germany and Japan were banned from qualifying as being losers off WWII and being occupied by allied forces.

Austria and Italy were not made to suffer the same fade and Italy automatically qualifying as title holder.

Brazil demanded, as part of taking on the hosting role, that the previous system of knock out was changed to having all teams divided into 4 groups. This meant that each team was guarantied at least 3 games and the overall number of games would increase from 16 games to 30.

The reason for this was two fold:

1) It was going to increase the revenue Brazil would receive, which it needed due to the ever increasing cost of staging such an event

2) It gave European teams more incentive to come all the way to South America.

The draw saw the following groups put together:

Group 1: Brazil, Mexico, Switzerland and Yugoslavia
Group 2: England, Chile, Spain and the USA
Group 3: Italy, India, Paraguay and Sweden
Group 4: Uruguay, Bolivia and France

Being reduced already to 15 teams, India pulled out after the draw saying the cost to travel were to high.

France also pulled out after the draw not being happy about the travel involved in group 4.

There was not enough time to find replacement teams and therefore the tournament went ahead with just 13 teams leaving group 4 with only 2 teams.

The winners of each group played each other once and the team which was on top of the table would be crowned World Cup Champions.

Brazil, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay managed to top their respective groups and played each other. This the only so far that there wasn't a final game between 2 teams playing of for the World cup.

After Brazil beaten Sweden 7:1 and Spain 6:1 the host nation was the overwhelming favorite to win the title. Uruguay had only managed a 2 all draw with Spain and just beaten Sweden 3:2 after falling behind twice, only to win the game with 2 late goals in the game.

Over 200 000 people came to watch the game Brazil vs Uruguay on the 16th of July 1950. This was a massive crowd and they saw a very good game being scoreless at half time.
2 minutes after the 2nd half had started, the Host Nation Brazil took the lead. Uruguay equalized on 66 minutes and scored the winning goal 11 minutes before the end of the game.

Uruguay was crowned World Cup Champions for the 2nd time.

Ademir from Brazil was the highest goal scorer in 1950 with 9 goals.
