The quoll is a small carnivorous marsupial found in Australia.

About Quolls

With the largest species about the size of a cat, these Australian marsupials are sometimes called "native cats." They somewhat look like a spotted ferret or small possum.

Throughout their range in Australia and Tasmania, they are considered a protected or endangered species. There are four varieties of quoll and all are threatened by land development and imported predators, such as the fox.

Quolls are primarily nocturnal and have become scavengers in places where they live near human garbage cans.

What do Quolls eat?

Quolls eat a wide variety, from wild fruits and small insects up through rodents and even rabbits.

Fun Facts About Quolls

  • The four types of Quolls are the the Spotted-tail Quoll, the Northern Quoll, the Eastern Quoll and the Western Quoll.
  • Spotted-tail Quolls are also called Tiger Quolls and are 50% larger than the next largest species.

A quoll is a large carnivorous marsupial, native to Australia and New Guinea, that looks a bit like a cross between a cat and a possum. It belongs to the family Dasyuridae (which literally means quoll family) which includes quolls, thylacines, Tasmanian devils and a number of smaller carnivores.

Quolls are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. They hunt birds, small mammals, lizards and insects and any animals they find dead. They also eat fruit. Quolls hunt mainly at night, but sometimes in the day as well.
Genus Dasyurus or quolls
This family has a fearsome reputation because of their carnivorous habits but some quolls are endangered or extinct largely because of competition with foxes.
