You have some really great Lenses and write/illustrate them beautifully. I never knew what these structures were called; on Squidoo you live and you learn everyday ;-)

Amazing Quonset huts! That just remind of Igloo in its structure..These are fascinating places and houses that includes in my bucket list to travel someday.. ~Blessed by a Squid Angel. Congrats on your well deserved Purple Star. :)

I love "repurposed" homes. I love in the Midwest, and occasionally you see an old quonset hut turned into a house. So unique!
  • deliverator Mar 26, 2012 @ 1:06 pm | delete
I have to try and make one of these sometime. Smaller scale preferred.

for some reason I have always liked these things! I enjoyed this lens

What a funky dwelling! I never would have thought about these as architectural gems until I read your lens. And the videos were really interesting! Keep up the good work, EditorDave!

I learned a lot from reading your lens. Enjoyed the videos too. I didn't know much about Quonset Huts before. Great lens, great info, well presented.

Quite interesting. Never knew the history of these unique structures. Grew up in the Midwest where most farms had a quonset hut for storing tractors and other agricultural equipment. I like the quonset hut with the wooden shake shingles. Nice look. Thanks for expanding my knowledge with this unique history lesson. :-)

I never knew these were called quonset huts. Another interesting lens, EditorDave.

Good stuff, I wish I could get one for use when I head off the grid one day. As it turns out though, I intend to use the CONEX box as my building module. Keep it up!

Darn interesting lens... I really like quonset huts. THUMBS UP!

    Interesting topic

Awesome stuff, some of the best lenses are written by people who are way into the topic. I wrote a lens on 10 of the coolest quonset huts, and lensrolled & linked to yours because you've got some great info about quonsets in American history and culture. :)

I grew up across the street from a quonset house (I think made of wood?) it was small, and had shingles and siding top, sides, etc. But I've been facinated since! Thanks!

Interesting lens. So did the Americans steal the design from the Brits or vice versa. Can't imagine setting up house in one of these but then again people are living in shipping containers here.

Growing up after WW2 in the UK I remember these buildings as 'Nissen Huts', there were quite a few around. Miniature versions were used as air raid shelters, they were half buried in the ground. Pretty useless against a direct hit or near miss, but did give some protection against shrapnel and falling debris. Very informative lens.
  • kwj Jan 2, 2011 @ 5:26 am | delete
I'm familiar with Nissen huts from the now abandoned RAF Stanmore near where I live in Bridgnorth UK.

    Well done.

I knew of those buildings but wasn't aware of their names.

Really interesting and well done lens. One time driving to my grandparents our car broke down and the garage that fixed it was in a Quonset hut. I think they're pure Americana.

Well, I do declare. A Bank of America in a Quonset hut. :) Have seen a few of these out and about, but didn't know they were called Quonset huts.
  • kiwisoutback Aug 22, 2010 @ 6:28 pm | delete
Come to think of it, I did see these across the country, at least once. I wouldn't say they are the prettiest structures I've ever seen, but you can't beat the price or functionality. Nice work!

Growing up in as a teenager in the 1970's we lived in an ordinary New England neighborhood, but our older neighbors had a little yellow quonset hut and I can remember always wanting to go visit them with my mom because I was facinated by it. I had not thought about quonset huts until stumbling across your lense tonight. Great lens. Thanks!

I see these in KS where they use them to store salt and sand for winter road use. Very interesting. I'd not thought of their being converted to houses.

I lived in a quonset hut with my parents in the 60's in Mangilao, Guam. My dad remodeled it, and it was a pretty nice home, until Super Typhoon Karen flattened it in Nov 1962.
My dad taught in elephant quonset huts at George Washington High School in Maina, Guam. They were pretty badly damaged in the same typhoon as well.

We just got back from visiting our son at Lackland AFB near San Antonio, Texas--and we saw lots of them on the base (there are at least 3 air force bases near San Antonio--probably more). Saw some by the road outside the bases as well--so I've added a picture of one of those here.

My father was in the Air Force so I have seen the inside of many quonset huts.

I think a Q-hut would make a great lake house!

    Congratulations on the purple star.

I've been tinkering up residential floorplans for this type of building for years because they just look so frickin cool. I especially like that you can get great height in the rooms and they look cheap to build. Only thing is it needs work on the insulation. Great info! Where was this page a couple years ago when I first started researching quonset? 5 stars!
  • LarryBass Sep 7, 2008 @ 5:36 pm | delete
Quonset and Iroquois lodges, had never crossed in my mind before. Thanx for making a few light bulbs go off for me here friend! I Love this Lens. 5 Stars well earned.

    Cheers,
