Green Quotes from Thinkers, Writers and Politicians
This is a quick read and a great book for both quote book lovers and those wanting to learn a bit more about green thinking over the last 500 years.
Author Fred Weiss has gathered dozens of quotes from philosophers, scientists, journalist and politians addressing nature and the environment, organized them by date and added his comments. The quoted range from Gandhi to Dan Quayle and Bill Ruckelshaus to Albert Einstein. This journey over time helps to provide some context for today's green movement and the challenges it faces.
The comments are sometimes witty, sometimes harsh, but usually both entertaining and helpful in understanding today's world face of Global Warming.

Little Green Book of Environmental Quotes and Comments
Chapter 1
Who, What, Where, When, Why
I'm sitting and writing this first chapter, of my first book, as the last piece prior to sending it off to print. Since you are reading this, it's likely this book of green quotes sounded interesting or you bought it because of my great fame as an author. Given my lack of fame, I think maybe you're interested in things "Green". Readers like you are why I wrote this book. I hope it helps people gain a wider perspective on the environment.
I don't contend that this is a scholarly work, or the most original, or even an educated opinion on environmental thought. I hope you will judge this work based on how many new ideas it brings to you and the number of conversations that it contributes to. This book is all about helping people better focus on the environment we live in and the danger that it faces from humanity.

Chapter 2
Leaders and Thinkers from History
Most men it seems to me, do not care for nature, and would sell their share in all her beauty, as long as they may live for a stated sum. Thank God men cannot fly, and lay waste the sky as well as the earth.
Henry David Thoreau, Winter: From the Journal of Henry D. Thoreau, 1887
Isn't that cute, he didn't imagine chlorofluorocarbons creating a hole in the Ozone layer or CO2 melting the ice caps.
Chapter 3
Little Green Book of Environmental Quotes and Comments
The Politicians
It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.
Dan Quayle retired Vice President, USA
Dan Quayle usually had an alternate take on reality, once suggesting that a D&C (a gynecological procedure) could provide an alternative to abortion. Unfortunately the VeeP didn't realize that a D&C was the most commonly used surgical procedure for abortions.
Chapter 4
The Writers
The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.
Isaac Asimov, science fiction writer and scientist.
That was true when he said it. It's even truer today, since the pool of knowledge grows at a faster rate every day.
Chapter 5
Academics, Artists, Celebrities, etc
I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago.
Sir George Porter, 1967 Nobel Chemistry winner, quoted in The Observer, 26 August 1973
Oh how cynical and how right you are, Sir George!
Chapter 6
Lay People
Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time.
Motto of the Baltimore Grotto, a caving society
I go one step further, if you like the idea of preserving the wilderness, DON'T GO THERE! Once you start bringing in people, it's no longer wilderness.
Chapter 7
The Famous Yet Unknown.
I am the earth. You are the earth. The Earth is dying. You and I are murderers.
Ymber Delecto. They are often quoted but we've been unable to find any information about who this person is or was.
We may not be murderers, but as a species we've been turning our backs and pretending that we aren't involved and can't stop this.
