Faith Is An Open Hand

While faith means different things to different people. We all like quotes about faith. I discovered while making this lens that quotes specifically about faith are not all that easy to uncover. Which made the project all the more interesting. If you agree, all the better!

I used to think I had to follow the precepts of childhood church if I was to call myself religious. Not so. If you are enchanted by insightful, inspirational quotes about faith you probably, like me, have a few religious bones in your body. It doesn't mean you agree with others all the time about what religion, means.

On this page I've shared my favorite poems about the kind of faith many of us share - faith that embraces and contains, but rises above dogma or ideology. Other quotes about faith encourage our better selves.

Faith Is Being Sure .....

...what you hope for - and certain of what you do not see. ~ The Bible; Hebrews chapter 11, verse one

"Faith Is A Fine Invention"

This poem by Emily Dickinson hints at the humorous side of faith

"Faith" is a fine invention
When Gentlemen can see -
But Microscopes are prudent
In an Emergency.

- William Shakespeare

In faith, I do not love thee with mine eyes,
For they in thee a thousand errors note;
But 'tis my heart that loves what they despise,
Who in despite of view is pleased to dote...

But my five wits, nor my five senses can
Dissuade one foolish heart from serving thee -

"Keep The Faith, Baby" Was a '60s Unifying Quote About Faith for Both the Civil Rights Revolution

& faith in the power of demonstrations in the 1970s to stop the Vietnam War. And, now in Egypt, perhaps American will lend this sentiment

"Faith Is A Pierless Bridge"

Faith is like a bridge with no visible sign of supports to take us where we want to go

Faith -- is the Pierless Bridge
Supporting what We see
Unto the Scene that We do not --
Too slender for the eye

It bears the Soul as bold
As it were rocked in Steel
With Arms of Steel at either side --
It joins -- behind the Veil

To what, could We presume
The Bridge would cease to be
To Our far, vacillating Feet
A first Necessity.

Faith is an intangible that takes shape in a fine poem

I'd rather think about faith in other ways

miaponzo says:

I look straight to God for help.. and speak directly to Him... it's the only thing that works!

Faith - like sunrise on fresh eyes

"A Child's faith is new - Whole - - Wide - like the Sunrise On fresh Eyes - "

Emily Dickinson's version of Shakespeare's advice, "To thine own self be true."

"Lad of Athens
Faithful be
To Thyself
And Mystery
All the rest is Perjury"

Reason is our soul's left hand, Faith her right. ~ John Donne

Whatever The Reason ~ Sometimes Faith Becomes Tattered

Its renewal is both "fair" and invisible ~ This poem says renewal of faith is woven into our atmosphere

quotes about faith

To mend each tattered Faith
There is a needle fair
Though no appearance indicate --
'Tis threaded in the Air --

And though it do not wear
As if it never Tore
'Tis very comfortable indeed
And spacious as before --

~ Emily Dickinson

Brimming With Confidence In One's Own Faith!

These words about faith make me think of little girls exchanging secret boasts!

Brimming With Confidence In One's Own Faith

My Faith is larger than the Hills --
So when the Hills decay --
My Faith must take the Purple Wheel
To show the Sun the way --

'Tis first He steps upon the Vane --
And then -- upon the Hill --
And then abroad the World He go
To do His Golden Will --

And if His Yellow feet should miss --
The Bird would not arise --
The Flowers would slumber on their Stems --
No Bells have Paradise --

How dare I, therefore, stint a faith
On which so vast depends --
Lest Firmament should fail for me --
The Rivet in the Bands

Faith: A Definition

Faith written in Japanese calligraphy

Depending on which dictionary I pick up, when I looked up "faith," this definition is universal: "confidence in another's ability, or trust in a person or thing where belief is not based on proof."

Children & Their Faith + Grownups' True-to-Life Expectations = Poetry

I think Emily Dickinson's poetic words, "sorrowful as certain" beautifully captures the journey to adult faith that anticipates men instead of "kings"

quotes about faith

The Child's faith is new --
Whole -- like His Principle --
Wide -- like the Sunrise
On fresh Eyes --
Never had a Doubt --
Laughs -- at a Scruple --
Believes all sham
But Paradise --

Credits the World --
Deems His Dominion
Broadest of Sovereignties --
And Caesar -- mean --
In the Comparison --
Baseless Emperor --
Ruler of Nought --
Yet swaying all --

Grown bye and bye
To hold mistaken
His pretty estimates
Of Prickly Things
He gains the skill
Sorrowful -- as certain --
Men -- to anticipate
Instead of Kings --

I certainly enjoyed my visit today to your "leap of faith" page ... most inspiring ... and sometimes that leap of faith means stepping outside one's comfort zone.
