"The essence of nonviolence is love. Out of love and the willingness to act selflessly, strategies, tactics, and techniques for a nonviolent struggle arise naturally. Nonviolence is not a dogma; it is a process."

~Thich Naht Hanh

You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.

Peace Quotes From Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek but a means by which we arrive at that goal."

"One of the most persistent ambiguities that we face is that everybody talks about peace as a goal. However, it does not take sharpest-eyed sophistication to discern that while everbody talks about peace, peace has become practically nobodys' business among the power-wielders. Many men cry Peace! Peace! but they refuse to do the things that make for peace."

"If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. he lived, thought, and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore him at our own risk."

"One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means."

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word."

"It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it."

Where Does Peace Begin?

We speak of peace in hopes of stopping war and killing each other. We wear a peace symbol to declare our desire for peace. We lead protests in the name of it.

But where does peace begin?

According to those who lived their lives setting an example of peace; Mother Teresa, Buddha, even John Lennon, to name a few, peace begins with each of us individually and the beliefs we carry in our hearts. It then is displayed in our actions, actions that illustrates who we are and what we believe in.

It begins with you and me. How we perceive ourselves and what we choose to do with our thoughts that inevitably result in an action. It begins with reflecting and knowing who we are and what we choose to do with our talents.

In order to begin a relationship of inner peace with ourselves, we must first develop a relationship with our God.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself."

"Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding."

"The real and lasting victories are those of peace, and not of war."

Mahatma Gandhi

Quotes on Inner Peace From Gandhi

"If we wish to create a lasting peace we must begin with the children."

"An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind."

"In the secret of my heart I am in perpetual quarrel with God that He should allow such things [as the war] to go on. My non-violence seems almost impotent. But the answer comes at the end of the daily quarrel that neither God nor non-violence is impotent. Impotence is in men. I must try on without losing faith even though I may break in the attempt."

"Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty."

"Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know. But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings."

~Mahatma Gandhi

A Peace Quote From Black Elk

Spiritual Quote

"The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us."
Black Elk

Bob Marley Peace Quotes

We should really love each other in peace and harmony, instead we're fussin' n fighting like we ain't supposed to be.

Me only have one ambition, y'know. I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see mankind live together - black, white, Chinese, everyone - that's all.

"Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace."

"To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him."

Peace of Mind

If peace begins in the heart and resides in the mind, where do we go to find peace?

I believe that as individuals we have to discover the place that provides us the most satisfying peace of mind. For me that is being outside, usually in the woods, enjoying what God created away from the clamor of the world.

Just walking along a path or trail, even sitting quietly on a park bench can remove an immeasurable amount of turmoil from my mind.

Walking for exercise, as long as I'm off the beaten path of the world is therapeutic to my mind as well as allowing me to achieve my fitness goals at the same time!

What do you do to find peace of mind?

So many "daily readings" books contain flowery nuggets with very little substance. Here, the editor carefully chooses insights that are intelligent, wise, sometimes funny, and always meaningful. "I never thought of it that way; that makes so much sense," is a refrain one is sure to repeat reading Lewis.

Dalai Lama - A Man Of Peace

Quotes on Peace of Mind

"I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion, and elimination of ignorance, selfishness, and greed."

"Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace."

"Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free."

"Human Beings, indeed all sentient beings, have the right to pursue happiness and live in peace and freedom."

Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace!
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life!

"When my heart is at peace, the world is at peace."
Chinese Proverb

Lao Tzu

Quotes On Inner Peace

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

Freedom from desire leads to inner peace.

One can not reflect in streaming water. Only those who know internal peace can give it to others.

"All we are saying is give peace a chance."

"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace."

"Guilt for being rich, and guilt thinking that perhaps love and peace isn't enough and you have to go and get shot or something."

"You either get tired fighting for peace, or you die."

~John Lennon (1940-1980)

"I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself."

"There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires."

"I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all! I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands."

Albert Schweitzer

In the hearts of people today there is a deep longing for peace. When the true spirit of peace is thoroughly dominant, it becomes an inner experience with unlimited possibilities. Only when this really happens - when the spirit of peace awakens and takes possession of men's hearts, can humanity be saved from perishing.

-- Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)

No doubt that pursuit of peace is the ideal objective;
Exhortations of great minds, their wisdom collective.
But would a mind understand, that hasn't seen strife,
The desirability of a quiet, serene and peaceful life?

What Does Peace Mean To You?

  • JoshK47 May 18, 2012 @ 9:51 am | delete
    It means people getting along and working together towards the betterment of humanity. It'd be unrealistic to believe that all conflict would go away ever, but I do believe we could start working towards making the world a better place for everyone, everywhere.
