All About Rabbits, Cages and Accessories

We are rabbit lovers! My daughter breeds, sells and shows them. So it's logical that we would have a bit of experience to share about what works best for housing your pet rabbit. What type of cage is best depending on where you plan to house your rabbit? What other accessories are essential and which ones are nice but not really necessary? Find the answers here.

Cage Type

Wire or Plastic Bottom

One question we often get is what type of cage is best? Partly that depends on your own personal preference and partly it depends on where you plan to keep your rabbit. You've probably seen the fancy rabbit hutches (mostly made in China) - some are made of high quality wood with a real little house for your rabbit and a wire mesh area or "run" where the rabbit can get lots of exercise. If you have just one rabbit and want to pamper it, that may be a good choice - although a bit pricey.

One common type is constructed of a wire cage that sits in a plastic tray. This type is good for an indoor pet rabbit that will be taken out frequently for exercise and to have the cage cleaned. It doesn't work very well for rabbits with long fur unless you plan to clean the cage every day or at most, every other day. You will need some kind of bedding material for the bottom of the cage and that gets soiled and wet pretty quickly unless you plan to have a big enough cage for a litter box and then teach your bunny how to use it.

The other type that isn't quite as pretty, but extremely practical is the all wire cage with a tray underneath that slides out for easy cleaning. This type of cage allows the rabbit droppings and urine to fall through the wire and into the tray, keeping the rabbit clean at all times. There are many variations of wire cages including many different sizes (appropriate to the breed you are raising) and some with multiple sections if you have more than one rabbit.

If you're creative and don't mind a little bit of work, it's relatively easy to build a wire cage. If you're a serious rabbit owner and short on cash this is the most economical option provided you have access to the right kind of wire and don't mind investing in a special tool to crimp the little clamps that tie it all together.

Outside rabbits will do best in a cage that provides shelter from both sun and rain. This can be accomplished either with a hutch type of rabbit cage or by utilizing a wire cage and keeping it under a shelter such as an overhanging roof or in a garage. Rabbits are very sensitive and can easily be overcome by heat stroke if they are left in the direct sunlight or extreme heat. So a good swamp cooler, a powerful fan, a nice shady tree or even air conditioning will make your rabbit much happier!
