Horse Racing -- Great Finishes

This lens features some of my favorite horse races of all time!

Videos of Great Thoroughbred Horse Races

Watching these races stirs memories and excitement in my heart! I have always loved horse racing...there is just something about it that draws me in.

Here's an example of why. Picture this...

A huge red chestnut horse wins the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in record times. He now has a chance to win the first Triple Crown in 25 years if he can win the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes.

A media frenzy ensues. The horse is featured on the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated.

Many speculate that the chestnut is not bred to win at the Belmont distance, and others claim he is not sound physically.

Belmont day arrives and the anticipation is unbearable. Will this horse be able to silence the critics and win the first Triple Crown in 25 years?

Watch the video below to see how this story actually ended.

One of the Greatest Rivalries of All Time

Sunday Silence vs Easy Goer

These two thoroughbreds made 1989 a very fun year to be a horse racing fan. They were clearly the cream of that year's crop.

Sunday Silence -- who happened to be my favorite -- had won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Easy Goer easily took the Belmont.

Horse of the Year came down to the 1 1/4 Breeder's Cup Classic. This particular race, along with Tom Durkin's call of the finish, is one of my all-time favorites.

Enjoy!

"Sunday Silence surges to the front...Blushing John trying to fight back...Easy Goer...with one..final acceleration...and Sunday Silence... holds on! And he wins by a desperate neck! Easy Goer was too late...not enough...to win it... and it was Sunday Silence...in a racing epic!"

Another Brilliant Stretch Call by Tom Durkin

Ferdinand Beating Alysheba by a Nose in the 1987 Breeder's Cup Classic

The 1987 Breeder's Cup Classic (akin to the Superbowl) was the first Classic that pitted two Kentucky Derby winners against one another.

The race -- and the call -- turned out to be among the most exciting in horse racing history.

Personal Ensign -- Undefeated Filly Champion!

Personal Ensign Ends Career Undefeated

The 1988 Breeder's Cup Distaff was a showdown between an undefeated filly and a Kentucky Derby winning filly.

Personal Ensign disliked the sloppy racetrack and looked hopelessly beaten by the front-running Winning Colors.

Somehow, though, she summoned the will to win and end her career a perfect 13 for 13 -- keep in mind, there hadn't been an undefeated champion in over 80 years.

You won't believe that she actually gets up in time to win!

Witness the courage and heart of a champion!

"At the 16th pole it looked like Personal Ensign was facing her first defeat...but in those final...110 courageous yards...she certainly proved herself...a champion this afternoon!" Tom Durkin

Sunday Silence vs Easy Goer

1989 Preakness Stakes -- Second Jewel of the Triple Crown

Sunday Silence was not as heralded as Easy Goer. Apparently, no one told him, because he beat Easy Goer in the Kentucky Derby and again in the Preakness!

Cigar -- What a Horse!

He Won 16 Straight Races Against the World's Best in the 90's

Watch Cigar capping off his perfect 10 for 10 1995 season by winning the Breeder's Cup Classic. He would go on to win the inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup, tie Citation's modern day record of 16 straight victories, and attain a North American earnings record of just under 10 Million. Not bad for a horse, huh?
