Adopting A Thoroughbred

Brief history of the Thoroughbred, along with the versatility of the breed and how you can adopt an ex-racer.

Adopting A Thoroughbred

The Mighty Thoroughbred

Thoroughbred horses are bred for speed and endurance. They are the fastest equines in the world, running at speeds of 40 mph.

The breed's ancestors began with three Arabian sires (the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerly Turk), who were brought to England from the Middle East and bred to native mares in the 17th century. The General Stud Book was established in 1791 and traces all thoroughbreds back to the three foundation sires.

Thoroughbreds cannot be reproduced via artificial insemination and be Jockey Club registered. The racing industry is a vital sport which employs thousands. Ex-racers are used in many disciplines, as are those bred but not raced. Averaging 16 hands high, this mighty and athletic horse excels in eventing and hunting, although it can be used for dressage, show jumping and is very popular in polo. The animal is highly intelligent, quick and eager to please, though typically high strung and more temperamental than other breeds.

Because of the Thoroughbred's intelligence and desire to please, the horse makes an excellent and willing partner for a variety of disciplines. Many organizations across the United States re-home ex-racers, enabling the breed to find a new job and giving it a second chance. Lope, Canter and New Vocations are but three of numerous adoption agencies. Each has specific criteria for adoption, and more often than not, an adoption fee is required. Due to injuries, some horses are not rideable and available as companions only. However, the adoption fee for this group is either waived or extremely low. Even if a Thoroughbred can no longer be ridden, s/he can still be a wonderful friend to another horse you might own.

I've had the great opportunity to visit Lope and view the ranch and horses. I was awed by the horses who'd made over a million dollars between them in their racing days. The time and effort taken by those who re-home these beautiful animals into new careers is astounding and extremely honorable.

Ex-racers are not for beginner riders. Horses off the track must have time to relax and learn to be a horse again. If the animal has racing injuries, proper veterinary care along with time off is necessary. As with any equine purchase, all would-be owners should have a vet check performed prior to money exchanging hands. Enlisting your riding instructor so the horse receives professional training once he's had some time off is highly recommended.

The disciplines I ride prefer fashionable warmbloods, for the most part. All breeds of horses have their merits, and many excel at certain tasks. However, I still view the mighty Thoroughbred as the most generous and able partner I've ever ridden. Re-homing a horse who's performed one job and is now ready for another is one of the best gifts I can pass along. It is a privilege to own and work with these mighty horses, who are such adaptable and willing partners.

Dedicated to ZMan, my favorite ex-racer.
