Rachel Atherton

Ranked #11,878 in Sports & Recreation, #287,105 overall

Something tells us that extreme sports are not just for guys with big balls of steel. In case of Rachel Atherton, a woman who breaks boundaries in downhill mountain biking clearly shows that girls deserve their... not just any, but unique spot among mountain bikers.

When Rachel (nicknamed Waynehead) was about 8 years old she started riding BMX bikes and mountain biking at the age of 11. Her older brothers were a big influence on her.

Today a 24 year old Rachel puts all her efforts in winning World Cups and never the less, she enjoys that because biking is her passion, love and the way of living. Currently she holds the 4th place in UCI women's World Cup.

Rachel's Accident

On January 18th Rachel and her two brothers Gee and Dan were road cycling southbound lanes of Amesti Road just south of Browns Valley Road when pickup truck collided with her. The official police report says that she was driving on the wrong side of the road and that she wasn't wearing helmet. She sustained bruises and cuts as well as dislocated shoulder and took a long time to recover.

In conclussion

Road biking can sometimes be more dangerous then freeride or downhill mountain biking.
