How do you describe your artwork?I like to describe my sculptures as a beautiful solution to a brush pile. Each sculpture is as unique and one of a kind as the sticks they are made from.
What draws people to your art?
I think people are drawn to my sculptures because they are unique and the medium is very recognizable. Everyone can relate to the stick laying out in the yard, but the idea that those sticks are good for something always seems to amaze them. Another reason may be that people just haven't seen anything like my sculptures before. I do not know of anyone who is using osage-orange wood or "hedge" in the same way that I am.
What is your background?
While I have always loved art, I have not always pursued it as a career. I grew up in Webb City MO and then attended MSSU where I received the "Thomas Hart Benton Art Scholarship". Unfortunately I did not complete my degree. I still take classes from time to time and figure I should be done in another 10 yrs at this rate.
Who has influenced you the most?
I must give a ton of credit to my husband who pushed me to move out of my comfort zone and experiment with new mediums. Without him I would not be making these one of a kind sculptures. Second of all I have to give myself some credit for finally stepping up and working to make my dreams come true. I spent a lot of time believing that art wasn't going to pay the bills and I needed to%u2026 in the words of my parents " Do what I have to do so I can do what I want to do". Or in other words get a real job so I can afford my art hobby. So far my parents were right, but I am getting closer every day. Dreams don't just happen you have to work for them! Thankfully my husband has supported us so that I can pursue my passion.
I recently learned of an artist named Debora Butterfield who has done horse sculptures from driftwood ,metal, and mud / hay to name a few. She had inspired me to not be limited to the traditional methods and mediums when creating a new piece.
Larry Glaze, an amazing artist who also works with hedge: has really inspired me to stick with "hedge" and has offered his support. I have not known Larry for very long, but I can see how he will continue to influence my work in the future with his no need to "Re-invent the Wheel" approach!
What inspires you?
I find that just about anything can be an inspirational spark, but my main inspirations come from my kids and our family farm. With 4 kids running around the house the imaginations really run wild!
What do you hope people take away from your work?
I hope people see my work and are inspired to try something creative and unexpected! I hope that they bring good feelings to everyone that sees them just like they do for me.
What does art mean to you?
I find art very therapeutic. It is my outlet of self expression. Art makes me a better mother%u2026 it makes me a better wife and even a better person. When I feel that life is tough I do art and I am recharged. Art gives me freedom and self confidence.
What is your favorite piece of artwork in your home?
My favorite piece of artwork that is "in" my home is a painting titled "Loving Family". My favorite "outdoor" piece is my sculpture "Dreamcatcher".

- Hi Rachel! Love you horse sculptures made from found wood.In fact they look very similar to the driftwood horses. I'll be featuring your horse sculptures in my Whimsical Garden Art lens and will be snagging the pics from your video and your site (if that's alright), with links to your lens and site.
