Radio Controlled Helicopters in the UK - a different toy!
Ranked #23,653 in Parenting & Kids, #1,072,206 overall
Radio Controlled Helicopters - can be addictive and could become a lifetime interest, find out more
This is part of a series on Electronic Learning Toys, and concerns helicopter toys. Definitely a toy with a difference, for both adults and children - read on to discover more.
Note: The information provided in this lens is mainly for the benefit of UK readers, but there are links provided for readers from the United States.
Radio Controlled Helicopters are not quite your 'normal' learning toys, but they do require some patience and determination to fly properly. Compared with radio controlled cars, or planes, there are 3 dimensions to cope with; so an interesting challenge!
The fact that a helicopter will start flying by lifting vertically means that it can be flown indoors (assuming that care is taken in the early stages of learning to fly the helicopter, in order to avoid 'bumping' into the wrong things!). Some RC Helicopters can also be flown outside, but only in fairly calm weather. However most Radio Controlled Helicopters are designed for flying indoors, and they are not as much of a nuisance as it might at first appear!
There is quite a community of RC Helicopter enthusiasts in the UK and it could be an interest that you, or your children, may want to follow. What you don't want to do is go out and find a really expensive model before you have built up the necessary skill.
There are some excellent helicopter toys available and they're not all as hard to fly as you might think; although some patience and perseverance is required, so probably better for teen aged children and adults.
The skill required can depend on the number of radio channels available. A different channel is needed to control each separate action (e.g. tilt of the blades). There are cheaper models with just two channels; still excellent helicopters, but needing more skill than 3, or 4, channels. For those who start treating this as a serious hobby, 6, or more, channels are more normal. One minor limitation with most basic helicopters is the need to re-charge batteries, with the normal flying time being anything from 5 to 15 minutes before batteries need charging, or replacing (rechargeable batteries are the best option obviously).
Okay so toy helicopters are not really an Electronic Learning Toy, but just imagine sitting somewhere in your house and receiving a message delivered by a helicopter, an interesting image! I know that a Radio Controlled Helicopter would make an excellent gift, for adult or child!

Superb toy helicopters available
S010 Vision 3ch RC Helicopter
This Radio Controlled Helicopter is great for relative beginners, but due to its extra precise controls, is also fun for experts too. This toy helicopter is an improvement on previous models partly because of its reinforced polymer body design and stronger blades, making it extremely durable. Perhaps the biggest improvement though, is due to its on-board stability system making even more precise flying a possibility. It also includes a Lithium Polymer 3.7v battery resulting in increased flight speed and more flying time between charges. It weighs in at only 10g and is a tiny 17cm long! Everything that is required to get you into the air as quickly as possible is included in the pack (you just need to buy 4 AA batteries for the controller). It can be used outside in very calm conditions. They do include a spare blade. The Super Vision helicopter is charged via the remote controller. Minimum recommended age of 8 years, but luckily for adults there is no maximum age!
There are some great reviews so far for this helicopter toy, and for real enthusiasts it has a few more features that have not been mentioned here.

Silverlit PicooZ Remote Control Helicopter
Just six inches long the PicooZ uses a stable system of flight, making it easier to fly early on. It is controlled via a two-channel infra red system, similar to a TV remote and without a long aerial.
PicooZ has 2 powerful micro motors, which are powered by a built in Lithium Polymer flight battery and enable flights of 10 minutes or more. Recharge takes less than half an hour with the portable charger provided. The PicooZ also has a strobe LED (blue) for those night manoeuvres. Made of expanded polypropylene foam, the PicooZ can be flown indoors or outdoors (in very calm conditions) and can take a few knocks while remaining in flyable condition.
Spare rotor blades are available for purchase separately, and being fairly cheap are definitely worth purchasing immediately. The rotor blades are probably the weakest part, and it can take some trial and error to get used to flying this helicopter.
There are three types of helicopter (A, B & C). The three types can actually be flown at the same time by different people, opening up interesting opportunities!
Extensive reviews suggest that this RC Helicopter is really worth the cost - despite the limited flight time between recharges.

Latest RC Helicopters for old and young!
Airwolf 3D RC Helicopter
This mini RC Helicopter is based on the 80's TV show Airwolf. Compared with earlier models the control available is excellent, with control in 6 directions. It consists of a unique ultra bendable material which withstands crashes. It has a recommended lower age limit of 8 years; but, as indicated before, better for teenagers and above.

Swift Master II RC Helicopter
Similar to the Airwolf, but controls not so precise. It does however have a longer flying time, quite long compared with a lot of toy helicopters.

Important notes concerning Radio Controlled Helicopters
If considering purchasing an RC Helicopter for the first time, just bear in mind the following points:
- Although they are easier to control than might be expected, nevertheless some patience and perseverance is required. Read any manuals carefully, remove any fragile articles liable to be knocked over and take your time.
- Younger children (8 - 12 years old) will need adult supervision
- The time it takes to recharge and the limited time it can be flown before recharge is required can be frustrating, but most users put up with this because of the delight they get 'flying' the helicopters
- Outside use for many of these helicopters is problematic to say the least; only in extremely calm conditions is it sometimes possible
