Your First Radio Controlled Plane

What Kind of RC Model Plane Should a Beginner Start With?

The easiest option to fly for a beginner is a glider. With 5-6 feet wing span (that's 1-2 metres), they're easy to fly and control. The only downside of a RC glider is that to fly it you'll need a relatively large area to fly it properly. On the gliders, the motor is only used for the take-off, not for the actual flying. Usually this means that you can get more air time with the same battery.

Another good option for a beginner is a "park-flyer". These light-weighted RC model planes are electric and easy enough for a beginner to build - some models even come completely built, which is great when you're starting out, so you can start your flight training right away.

As the name "park-flyer" notes, these model planes are sized in a way that they don't require so much space to fly them properly and electrically powered so they are slower and safer than some of the bigger counterparts.

When you're starting out, leave the "stunt-planes" and fast RC jet planes to the shelf. When you're starting out, these kind of radio controlled aeroplanes are way too fast for your to control them properly.

The most certain way to end your new hobby before it even starts, is to buy expensive, fancy looking plane and crash it on the maiden flight.. With a slow-flying RC model plane, you get the feel of flying, learn how the wind affects the flight and all-in-all, enjoy flying your very own radio controlled plane a lot more, and most importantly, for a long time.

Getting Started with the Radio Controlled Aeroplanes Hobby

Choosing the Right Kind of Plane Makes Things Easy, Safe and More Fun..

Building and flying radio controlled aeroplanes is a fun and entertaining hobby, but it can feel quite complex for a beginner.

Luckily, the modern radio controlled planes come with features that make the life of a new RC hobbyist a lot easier.,

A brand new hobbyist can get an easy and fun start, when choosing a first RC plane that:
1) come as ready-to-fly (RTF)
2) has an electric engine
3) has anti-crash system

Especially the ready-to-fly (RTF) RC model planes help beginners to get started and let new RC aeroplane owner to fly their planes almost immediately.

And compared to the situation just couple of years ago, starting a radio controlled aeroplanes hobby is a lot smoother: The decreased prices, lighter & more efficient batteries, the improved radio control systems, and better engines make starting a RC plane hobby easier and also a lot more affordable now..

RC Airplane Kit, Ready-To-Fly, Almost-Ready-To-Fly?

RTF Model Airplane? ATF?

Radio controlled aeroplanes come in all forms and shapes and so do the packages they come in...

First, for a beginner, the best option is a ready-to-fly package. RTF RC plane requires minimal building (at most, one evening) or no building at all (ready from the box). With RTF RC plane you can go out and start flying straight away, afteryou've charged the batteries that is, if you follow the recommendations and choose an electric RC plane as your first RC plane.

Second option is an Almost-Ready-To-Fly (ATF) radio controlled plane. ATF RC model plane packages don't usually include the radio control gear, so you'll have to buy that separately and building one can take anything from couple of days to a week.

Third option is full "build-it-yourself" package. These are meant for experienced RC hobbyists who have learned the basics and want to take their hobby to another level by building their own plane. Building a radio controlled aeroplane can be a tricky task, and requires practise just like flying radio controlled aeroplanes.

When choosing a package, remember that your first radio controlled plane does not need to look pretty.. it is more important that it flies well and is easy enough for your to control, so you can get the hang of things before moving on to the more advanced models or trying some maneuvers with your first plane..

Extra: Choosing Your First Radio

Consider getting yourself a radio with at least 4 channels, which will enable you to fly most radio controlled aeroplanes, even that your first one might only require 3. (To get even further, you might want to look for a radio that is capable of flying radio controlled helicopter as well, in case you want to try that too).

Unlike your first plane, the radio is at no risk to hit the ground (unless you go and smash it yourself), the chances of the radio getting broken are minimal, compared to the risk with the actual plane, which is likely to crash more than once during the early stages of your radio controlled aeroplanes hobby.
