about radioheads music and dvds

One of the most influential bands of the last twenty years, Radiohead themselves started out influenced by the giants of 'eighties alternative rock, with bands like Sonic Youth, REM and the Pixies high on their list of peers. Yet from the very first worldwide smash they had, the slow-building, almost hypnotic 'Creep' through to their superstar status of albums like 'OK Computer' and 'The Bends' and then the experimental 'Kid A', Radiohead have gone on to influence their own heritage of influential artists, like Coldplay and Sigur Ros.

Live, they're a unique prospect - whether it's with Thom Yorke's plaintive vocal style or Johnny Greenwood's chugging guitar chords, the experience is often electric and has left many seasoned concert-goers standing open-mouthed as the intensity of the occasion hits them. Their promo videos have often been awe-inspiring as well, such as the one made for the song 'No Surprises' which saw lead singer Thom Yorke encased in a Perspex case as it filled up with water. Thought-provoking stuff, both live and promotional material is represented in a collection of Radiohead DVDs.

It's perhaps surprising that, considering the career that Radiohead have enjoyed, there are so few official DVDs on the market. Of course, much of this can be put down to the band itself, who have always steadfastly refused to entertain the notion of being puppets for any promotion, instead choosing to do things their own way, even if it's at the cost of commercial success. However, what DVDs have been released more than make up in quality what may be lacking in quantity.

Released in 1999, 'Meeting People Is Easy' is a documentary that charts the band on their 1998 tour to support their album 'OK Computer'. With the content including live performances, photo shoots for press promotion, behind the scenes interviews as well as a preview of the material that was to follow on their next album, this is a pretty comprehensive DVD and an essential purchase for any fan of the band. Although the editing sometimes makes it hard to follow, it does show how the relationship between the band members occasionally came close to breaking point.

For those unfortunate to have never seen Radiohead play live, you can still get a feeling of what the experience is like with the classic concert DVD, 'Radiohead - Live At The Astoria', originally on VHS video tape but released on DVD in 2005. One of the most significant features of this DVD is that, apart from various multi-artist concerts, this is the only DVD of Radiohead live, and as such is a bit of a collector's item. A recording of their 1994 concert at London's famous Astoria theatre, it's also famous for being one of the few times that Radiohead played their seminal 'Creep' live (the band only just started playing it again after dropping it from their set for almost ten years).

One of the best-selling Radiohead DVD's is their collection of promo videos for the songs from 'OK Computer' and 'The Bends', titled '7 Television Commercials'. As well as featuring the seminal video for 'No Surprises', it also features the accompanying videos for classic Radiohead songs 'Fake Plastic Trees', 'Paranoid Android', 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)', 'Just', 'High And Dry' and 'Karma Police'. Although a fairly short DVD, at only just over thirty minutes in length, it's still a powerful set of images from an ever-evolving band.

Also available is a little curiosity by the name of '2+2=5', a short DVD released as a promo for the single of the same name. Accompanied by the song 'Sit Down Stand Up' as well as a short excerpt from 'The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time', it's pretty hard to come by and may b for serious collectors only.

The final proper DVD is, in fact, an unofficial release not sanctioned by the band. Called 'Homework', it's one that should really be avoided by all but the completist fan of Radiohead. With no songs or footage of the band (apart from some concert shots which even had another band's music playing over the soundtrack), this is a documentary about the genesis of Radiohead. There is also the Paris Convert for Amnesty International, at which Radiohead appeared with Shania Twain and Alanis Morissette among others.

Challenging; unconventional; artistically motivating. All these and more have been aimed at Radiohead videos over the years. Pick at least one up and decide for yourself.
