Radon Gas Detection & Monitoring

Most people are fairly unaware of radon until they buy or sell a home. During a home transaction it is a standard practice to detect for radon during the home inspection. If radon is present, and depending on the level, a radon mitigation system may necessary.

If you have a radon mitigation system, are considering one, or have found out your neighbors have a radon problem and would like to test your own home, then you may want to consider buying a radon gas detector. Unlike single use home radon tests, am electrical radon tester can be used multiple times in multiple locations.

The Safety Siren Pro Series is currently the top selling radon gas detector for consumer use.

Radon Detection and Mitigation

radon gas testRadon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is found in the soil. While radon is always being released into the air, it is within a home or building where radon can build up to unsafe levels. Since radon can increase your chances of developing lung cancer, especially if you are also a smoker, it is important to reduce your exposure as much as possible.

The problem with radon is you cannot see it or smell it. In fact, many people do not even know they have an issue with radon until the try to sell their home. A radon test is now a part of most home inspections and the results can sometimes come as a surprise. Even homes that have previously tested negative for radon can later show high levels of exposure. This is why it is important to periodically monitor your home.

The good news is that it is easy to test for radon in your home yourself. Standard mail-in lab tests are available for purchase and results can be had within a few weeks. If the test shows radon levels that are higher than the EPA guidelines (4 pCi/L), then you will want to retest. If your tests continue to show high levels then you will need to consider installing a radon mitigation system.

If the radon levels in your home are borderline, or even low, long-term monitoring is recommended. This is because the levels of radon can change from day to day and are affected by seasonal changes also. A longer testing period will provide you with the knowledge of what your home's radon levels truly are throughout the year. And as mentioned before, even if levels are low now, that could change in the future.

The Safety Siren Pro Series Radon Gas Detector is an easy-to-use detector for monitoring the levels of radon gas in your home. Unlike traditional radon test kits which can only be used once, this radon gas detector can be used over and over throughout various areas of your home.

The Safety Siren Pro tests air samples continuously allowing it to provide both short-term and long-term results. It also has an alarm that sounds if your levels go over the EPA guidelines for safety. This makes this radon gas detector useful for ongoing monitoring of any radon mitigation system you have installed, protecting you from exposure should your mitigation system fail in some way.

I have purchased the Safety Siren Pro for my own home for just these reasons. After purchasing a new home with elevated radon levels, we had a radon mitigation installed. While the post-installation test results were below the EPA standard of 4 pCi/L, they are still higher than I would like. To feel safe, I wanted to continue to monitor the levels in the basement but also make sure that the levels are low on the first floor where my family spends most of their time.

So far, I am very happy with my purchase. I feel safer being able to monitor the levels of radon throughout my home, and while the Safety Siren detector is more expensive that a single-use test kit, the cost of multiple tests over time would greatly exceed the one-time cost of this electronic radon gas monitor.
