Every child should have a rag doll

This story is all about my lovely 60 year old Rag Doll.
I think these dolls made out of old rags are the most heart warming and precious friend a child can have. My mom used to make rag dolls for us when we were young and up till this very day I still have mine. I don't know exactly when she was made, but I think it must have been shortly after World War II, because I was born in 1944.

I used to tell her all my secrets and she was a great listener. Rag Dolls are easy to make and below you'll find some videos on how to make your own rag doll.

This rag doll has a warm place in my heart and every time I look at her (she's sitting in my bedroom), I know there's still this little girl inside me, who loves rag dolls and want to share her secrets with them.

Stuffed Dolls are the best friends for kids

She knows the secrets I long forgot

stuffed dolls

She knows the secrets, I long forgot,
the memories of my childhood.
Her smile still brightens some of my days,
she's an elderly lady now, still looking good.

Her hair not changed, dark walnut look,
while mine is laced with grey
and though she's not always on my mind,
I know she's here to stay.

She was my friend and she still is,
made out of rags, by Mom,
just after war, the second one,
so I know, where she is coming from.

I didn't want her to be lonely,
got her some bears for company.
They're sitting in my bedroom corner,
for sixty years, she's been watching over me.

My Stuffed Doll

stuffed doll

My Mom had made me a doll that was stuffed,
no hands or feet and her belly looked puffed,
but her eyes were nice and her mouth was smiling,
on her trust and faith, I was always relying.

But through the years, when I was growing,
I took her lesser where I was going
and one day I just completely forgot,
about this doll, which 'round War time I got.

But then, it must be some twenty years ago,
my Mom moved to an elderly home you know.
My sisters and I had to clean up the house,
where she had lived with us and her spouse.

It was then that I stumbled upon my old doll,
my Mom always kept it in good order and all,
along with the bears of a later date
and I only could think, it must've been fate.

I took them home and will never again part,
from the toys of my youth, the joys of my heart.
They're sitting together and watch me grow old,
the story of my stuffed toy has now been unfold.

Collector's Items - Golliwogg books

The "Golliwogg" doll made its entrance in the late 19th century and was very popular in the 1960s in the USA as well as in Europe and Australia. It was reproduced by commercial and hobby toy makers and it had a very black skin, white rimmed eyes, clown lips and frizzy hair. The golliwogg was generally a male doll, though it's known that there were home made female dolls too. Being a male doll, it was considered a suitable toy for young boys. Due to its appearance, this doll has been the subject of heated debates, wether it should be preserved a cultural artifact or wether it should be retired as a relic of a time when racism against African descents was blatant. Due to the perception of racism, the popularity of the Golliwogg doll has been reduced. It's name changed to Golliwog, but as the word 'wog' was and is an abusive word, the name "Golly Doll" became more popular.

Raggedy Ann books for children

I think most people in the USA know or have known the Raggedy Ann doll. I'm Dutch and I wasn't familiar with this doll, so I looked her up on the internet. I came to know that the character was created by the writer Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938) and that she appeared in a series of children's books that he wrote and illustrated. Later on the book character was turned into a doll and it had red hear (yarn) and a triangle nose. The doll appeared to be a great success. Raggedy Ann got a brother, Raggedy Andy and he was dressed in a sailor suit with hat.

I think I had a precious golliwog during WW2 when they were quite common. My daughter had a knitted doll made by a great aunt. She called it Dolly Stayswith because in her child's way of talking "it stays with its clothes on". Great lens!

What a lovely tribute to rag dolls. My grandmother used to make them, and I made one with my daughter. They are precious.
