The Big Rain Barrel Rehab!
"Fixing What We Did Wrong The First Time."
Because you know how it goes; no matter how much research you do, eventually, you'll have to tweak things to suit your situation. So here's my couple of tweaks after 2 years of having rain barrels. Very minor stuff, but I think it's useful if you are in the process of researching your own first rain barrel.
If you've never done any kind of, "plumbing," or DIY projects before, this is not brain surgery. If you are determined, you can do this easily. Total cost for one rain barrel is about 15 bucks. Oh, and that includes making the little hose attachment. As for the barrels, they were all free. You have a car wash by your house? Some of their barrels used to just contain soap. BFD, rinse them out, you're good to go. The others that held wax or whatever, are labeled not to use for drinking water. Don't take those home.
Ready? Here we go...

Cute, But Useless
Hmmmmm....sound like anyone you know?
DITCH IT!
What a pain in the patootie!
First of all, things end up in your rain barrel. Things like gravel from your shingles, leaves from your roof, pine needles, and dirt. Plus, do you know how long it takes on a GOOD day for that cute little brass fixture to merrily fill a watering can? Do you have a lot of time? A whole lot of time?
Of course, being so small, any little thing jams it up and renders the entire things useless. What a waste to have to dump out all the water to flush the stupid spigot!
Useless!
Everything else works like a charm but this stupid thing has jammed up on me for the last time!
#1 Tweak
Remove and destroy that stupid teeeny tiny little spigot that spits into my water can! Enough is enough.
Bigger is Better!
My other 2 rain barrels, The Gusher Twins, have never given me any trouble.
Those babies are connected at the bottom and the overflow goes out a fat pvc pipe from the top right side. And don't kid yourself, I have full barrels within minutes of a rainstorm.
Here, you can see how The Gusher Twins are connected to the gutter (saw it off where you want it, screw on this bendy plastic piece you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot, and stick it in the barrel) and how they sit up on a stand so I don't have to bend over BUT you have to be strong enough to hold a full container of water if you're planning one of these. I'm fine with this set up, but it's probably not the best for your Grandmother's yard.
Wait a Minute!
How did I get those barrels to match the house?
2 years in the Florida sun and storms and it doesn't peel. If you want to decorate the whole barrel, spray your color in paper cups and you can still use a paintbrush!
Natural Stencils?

How Many?
In for a penny, in for a pound.
Probably the hardest part of the whole thing
which took all of 10 minutes or so to do
OR
The Connection
Removable
It does leak some. SOME. This water is mostly the gutter overhead that is dripping from the rain.
Double barrels are optional. Depends on your amount of rainfall and watering habits. Works like a charm for me. 3 water barrels and I've never run out of water for my yard, but I do live in Florida and when the rainy season hits, I barely use these at all. You have no idea how fabulous they were during our recent droughts though!
I like my water, the way I like my chocolate.
Fast and Furious!
The only drawback is that I can't put a hose on it and water with a hose.
Yet.
Got a Watering Can?
Old School?
The New Spigot
Out with the old, in with the new
That piece with the stick in it? That goes on the inside. If you're very clever, you can use a dowel or stick to hold it in place whilst you screw on the assembly outside the barrel.
Unless you have freakishly long monkey arms or you're a member of The Fantastic Four.
That little brass do-hicky on the end of the spigot? Well, the water in the barrel is not under pressure. So, I just press that up firmly into the spigot, screw the hose to the brass end and I can now use my hose to water the yard just like old times with the inferior but quaint metal spigot.
#2 Tweak
Hose adapter for all the rain barrels! Huzzzah!
Voila!
Who's yer Daddy!
Going Out of Town?
Questions?
YMMV
I know this is maybe a little brusque if you're nervous about setting up your first rain barrel, but go ahead, hit me up with a question or comment.

- There's a handy way to keep the gravel out of the rain barrel. Put a T in your downspout where you have your bendy thing, then attach the bendy thing to the T. On the bottom of the T attache something like a couple or three feet of BIG PVC pipe (like about 6 inches across) Get whatever you need to screw on a cap at the bottom. with this set up, when the rain hits and the dirty water is running off, most of the dirt goes down in the PVC. When that part fills up then it diverts to the rain barrel. Later you go out and unscrew the bottom of the PVC and let the dirty part run out. No more gravel in the barrel. guy from India has lots of rain water harvesting vids over on youtube, pretty cool.
