Brilliant. One of my favourite books in Unweaving The Rainbow by Richard Dawkins who takes issue with the romantic poets who said science was destroying the romanticism of rainbows by explaining their physics.

Nerd story: Richard Feynman (Nobel Prize in Physics) was asked to derive the order of the colors of the rainbow during his dissertation defense. He got it backwards. He convinced his professors that he was right and they were wrong (he passed).

Hasn't it been deemed that rainbows, because they are not a physical object, but an optical phenomena, are not able to make reflections, and that the "completion" in the rainbow seen above is a different optical spectacle on it's own?

This is truly one of the most beautifully put together lens that I have ever seen! Especially for those of us that love rainbows! One of my favorite places in Hilo, Hawaii is Rainbow Falls were you can often see double rainbows over the double falls. I was going to recommend this lens for LOTD and then (silly me) realized it was already selected! LOL! So, I added it to my faves and did a wee bit of bookmarking for you. I also lensrolled it to my Big Island of Hawaii-Hilo lens because of Rainbow Falls. Thanks so much for sharing this beauty.

BTW - Thanks for stopping by my Pumpkin Beer lens.

This is amazing - while I was walking up in the mountains in Wales (UK) back in November 2006 I saw this incredible small round rainbow barely 10 feet in front of me. I had walked just above the cloud/mist line and the sun was setting behind me. I had never heard about round rainbows before so thank you --- now I understand. It was so close to me I could almost touch it. I just wish I had my camera or mobile phone with me... Thank you

My favorite rainbow story occurred as we were on our way home from the courthouse after adopting our two children, who were then 7 and 11. As we drove in the rain, a double rainbow appeared in front of us, and Jason exclaimed something to this effect: "Look! God is blessing our adoption with two rainbows -- one for me and one for Sarah."

Very nicely done!!! Thanks for sharing. My favorite rainbow story is this: My daughters and I were traveling toward Pittsburgh, PA. We saw a rainbow up ahead. But we were actually able to "catch up" with it. After we did, it traveled down the road with us for at least a mile. It was just ahead of the truck and over us. It was the most amazing thing i've ever seen.

My last CD includes a song about a rainbow - It takes a little Rain to make a Rainbow - www.squidoo.com/lynnesmusic will take you to a link to the song on iTunes and Rhapsody!

    Thanks again for sharing!

I recently saw a beautiful double rainbow - it was visable for about ten minutes. I stood outside a store with a stranger looking at it. A third person got out of the car and was walking inside talking about what seemed like nothing. We pointed out the rainbow to them because they clearly missed it. They turned said "yeah" and went right back to their conversation, expressionless. They didn't even tell the person what they had seen. Our faces dropped. It does take a heartless cold person to not appreciate a rainbow.
  • LKW31 Apr 27, 2010 @ 5:20 pm | delete
Ha ha! No way! Well that person must have a very dull existence to not appreciate one of the most beautiful things in nature, more fool him. Thank you for your comment!

Congratulations on LOTD! What a great lens. We recently moved to Colorado and the rainbows are so amazing. We have seen many of the things you describe. Loved reading about it and understanding why. Blessed! http://www.squidoo.com/horseandpony-squidangel

Rainbow is the symbol of Pride and Unity! I don't have a favorite color. How could I choose just one.

Congrats on LOTD! Great info on the different types of rainbows (didn't know there were so many!). Didn't get too technical, just the right kind of information that would be great to pass on to kids!

So cool that this is LOTD! Also was remembering that the cover of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" is of a dispersive prism (as in your photo). And there's the Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz combination, "Dark Side of the Rainbow".

Whenever I see a rainbow I think of this beautiful quote by John Vance Cheney -
"The soul would have no rainbow had the eyes no tears."

Rainbows for me are about faith and hope, and a reminder that there truly is beauty in everything and everyone.
Thank you for a magical lens and congrats on LotD.

What a wonderful lens! I've had a general idea of how rainbows were formed, but hadn't heard of a number of the more unusual ones you talked about. I'm forwarding this on to my husband, a physics teacher.
  • LKW31 Apr 27, 2010 @ 3:48 am | delete
Thank you! If your husband sees anything I have missed or not explained clearly or properly please let me know. I am not a scientist and just write about what I love, so there are bound to be some dreadful errors!
