Rainwater harvesting with rain barrels

It is very important to harvest as much rainwater with rain barrels as possible.

Many homes use small scale rain barrels to harvest water for landscaping and gardening.

These small rain barrels, often recycled from food storage and transport barrels or, in some cases, whiskey and wine aging barrels, are often inexpensive

We have barrels and a tank

We have a very large house and garden - so we have 2 green barrels and 1 large water tank to harvest water for gardening.

We have also a well - but most of the time the water we have in the barrels and in the tank is enough, because we don't have very long, hot summers here.

And if we would always use drinking water / potable water for watering our garden - we would unnecessarily waste a lot of that water.

Our rain barrels

We have such green barrels which are functional but not to pretty ;)

And we have also something like this this tank (1000 Liter). It's also not very nice looking but holds a lot of water and it's standing behind the house.

Our barrels are really old now

Our barrels are really old now and we are looking for 2 new barrels which are looking a bit nicer.

We want to buy them in early spring next year - so we have a bit time to decide what to buy, but I want to start early to compare what is available and how much it will cost.

Decorative rain barrels

After searching a bit - I saw this serie: Algreen Rain Water Collection and Storage System

I think the storage system looks really nice and decorative and I like that I can use the top part of the barrel as a planter.

The product description says:

"The Algreen Agua Rain Water Collection and Storage System combines the timeless aesthetic elegance of ceramics with the enduring durability of modern plastics. This 50-gallon rainsaver is constructed from tough, roto molded plastic able to withstand extreme temperatures and will not chip, fade, or crack over time. The environmentally friendly rain barrel comes with a 4-foot garden hose with shutoff nozzle and corrosion-proof screen guard. The hose hangs neatly on the attached hook. The rain barrel doubles as a planter and measures 23 x 33 inches. "

We need two of them and I think the price would be ok.

Very nice! I like this one too :)

  • An elegant combination of a rain collector and a water fountain.
  • Faux stacked rock exterior.
  • Includes self contained pump.
  • Screen to catch debris.
  • Spigots at different heights for ease of use when filling up watering cans or hooking up to garden hose.
  • To be honest

To be honest - I dislike most barrels which are available.
I'm searching and searching but most of them look so "plastic like".....

But this trio looks very nice! There are no customer reviews for them at the moment . Maybe they are new...

We are not in a hurry - so I'll bookmark them for now and maybe customer reviews are coming before we want to buy something.

Algreen Cascata 65 Gallon Rain Barrel Urn Color - Terra Cotta

Amazon Price: $219.99 (as of 06/04/2012)Buy Now

    Kit includes:

3 Cascata Rain Barrel Terra Cotta - 65 Gallons The Cascata Rain Barrel combines the timeless aesthetic elegance of ceramics with the enduring longevity of modern plastics.

The Cascata is made of a roto molded plastic that is able to withstand extreme temperatures and will not chip, crack or fade. The 65 gallon rainsaver container is double walled for extra strength and durability while adding a beautiful exclamation point to your environmentally -friendly lifestyle. This rain barrel is not only beautiful in its own right but lets you add another level of garden decor with its unique, removable crown planter on top. Between the planter and the container is a corrosion proof screen guard to prevent debris from entering and clogging the drain.

An overflow valve keeps the barrel from filling too full and interfering with the planter. To direct the water away from your house you can attach a small hose to the valve and direct it into a garden or your lawn. Or place two barrels side by side and connect the overflow valve from one into the bottom drain of the second and collect more usable water!

Adding to its ease of use is a complete dispensing system. The 6 foot garden hose (included) attaches to the drain in the bottom and has a shut-off connector. Having the hose drain on the bottom maximizes the water pressure in the hose. A hook on the side holds the hose neatly in place. A brass spigot is also attached for easy dispensing. You will certainly enjoy many years of happy gardening with this beautiful and unique container.

The Cascata Rain Barrel comes with a Lifetime Warranty on the double walled enclosure!

    Different model

Something very different would be these wooden barrels - but I like them.
Hubby will like them too - wooden things are usually ok for him ;)

Rain barrels are a very good idea. My area in Texas is starting to get serious about them.

My Dad harvested rain straight into large rain barrels in our basement back in the old days.
