Plan For Raising Turkeys

Having a plan in place for raising turkeys will be key to your success. While they can be easy to raise, they are different from raising chickens.

How To Build a Turkey Pen

Raise a baby turkey that is healthy and happy

If you are unsure how to build a turkey pen, it really is dependent on how you want to raise a turkey.

  • They can be raised inside a house with little to no outside contact. They won't be able to forage on grass and bugs and exercise thoroughly.

  • You can have a house for safety at night and an enclosed yard that is stationary. They will have access to the yard during the day and in the safety of the house at night. This will not allow them to forage on grass as they will quickly turn the yard into dirt.

  • You can use a turkey tractor. This is an enclosed pen that is moved daily to fresh grass. They are never permitted to leave the safety of the pen. This method is really better for chickens, but can be adapted for turkeys.

  • You can have moveable pens that are moved to fresh grass daily to monthly depending on your needs. The pen can be used at night for safety and you will likely need some fencing for predator control.

All of these methods have their positives and negatives. It really will depend on your breed of turkey, space available and practices that you wish to employ.

How to Raise Turkeys
If you are considering adding turkeys to your repertoire of animals, good for you. They are fun and interesting to have around, but do require some different things than other birds including chickens. Find out everything there is to know about rowing these great tasting birds yourself.

Raising Free Range Turkeys

Raising Backyard Turkeys

Free range, pasture, organic, grass fed...HUH?

  • Grass fed/pasture. These are birds that are allowed to be outside on pasture for most of their life. They are usually taken in at night for predator control or can be left out with proper safety measures. They are still given a building (sometimes a simple overhead) that provides an area to get out of the elements.

  • Organic. This definition is very absolute. You will need to be certified organic and providing certified organic feed to claim an organic bird. The term organic is now regulated by the federal government and is strictly enforced. Does this guarantee a better turkey? Not necessarily. An organic bird may not have any or very little access to the outside for grass and bug consumption and exercise. This is (in my opinion) a much more important aspect to a quality product.

  • Free Range. While this may conjure up images of bison roaming in the wild west, it simply means that the turkey has been given the opportunity to go outside. This can be accomplished by simply opening the door and the turkey may or may not actually go outside.

Raising Turkeys With Chickens

Raising turkeys at home

Raising both turkeys and chickens is a great idea. While you may be tempted to put them together, you'll need to be sure to keep them separate. Blackhead is a disease that may not harm your chickens but can be fatal to your turkeys. If they need to be together, you will need to treat your turkeys. It is better if you can house them separately.

Raising Turkeys For Meat

Some other books available on the market

Raising turkeys for meat is probably the most common reason for having them. If you have a heritage breed, they will likely take 26-28 weeks to grow. The meat is richer and some say much better tasting. You will find the texture is firmer and there is not so much white breast meat as with your standard supermarket variety.

If you are looking to have a fresh homegrown turkey for your Thanksgiving table, simply count back from the time you would like it and you will have the date to have your poults delivered. Here are some more books to help with the process.

Nice lens. We have had chickens and geese but never turkeys. Our biggest problem was predators Coyotes here have gotten so bad we no longer keep birds which I miss. :) 5*

All poultry are fun, but there is just something about turkeys. Dogs are the ideal for predator control, but if used properly, electric fencing and housing are usually adequate. Thanks for your kind comments.
