I plan to use raised beds for my garden this season. Living in a desert region with poor soil, raised bed gardening is a great option. I'm creating my raised beds with straw bales.

I would like to put a raised bed garden in my yard. Hard to decide where to put it and how to start. Enjoyed reading your lens.

Yes, I have 3 raised beds currently and am hoping to make 2 more for next season. I have a question though - it doesn't seem to me that you put your 4x4 corner posts into the ground. As this was the hardest and most hated part of building my first beds, I'm wondering if you think that is a step I can skip and just have them setting on top of the ground?
  • AllThingsMichigan Sep 8, 2011 @ 12:47 pm | delete
The first raised bed that I built, I did put the posts into the ground. After that I decided it wasn't necessary. I still love my raised beds. I couldn't have a garden without them :)

We have several raised beds and I love gardening in a compact space. Lots less weeding and they're easy to manage with row covers or plastic to warm up the soil and keep out the bugs.

I just finished my first raised bed as a square foot garden. Also wanted to let you know that this lens is featured on my Square Foot gardening adventure lens.

  • mrtomato Feb 23, 2011 @ 11:05 am | delete
I've used raised bed gardening for years. I like it because I can start my crops earlier (soil warms faster) and I have less weeding to do. You are very thorough in your descriptions; I like your lense.

don't remove the grass!!! ..simply flip it over and let it add it's great nitrogen source to the soil !!!

Raised bed gardening is a good way to garden for people getting older and disabled individuals who can't bend so much. As you stated the beds can be raised to a height that is comfortable.

There's another way to prepare the ground under your raised bed: cover the grass or weedy ground with several layers of cardboard, or lots of layers of newspaper (wetted after you lay them), then build your bed on top. No digging, no herbicides. I have made multiple raised beds like this and it works extremely well. By the time the cardboard or newspaper rots, the grass underneath is dead and rotted too, to feed your plants.

Great information! We use beds for our garden too - also featured this lens in my own gardening lens:)

I had a couple about ten years ago, but they are not in a good location that gets sun all day. This year I am going to try gardening for food in the slope on one side of the property.
    Thanks for the gardening info.

Great pictures and diagrams! Raised beds are a great way to keep your garden contained and organized. Also wonderful for when your soil is to heavy and damp.

Thanks for this excellent guide. I am showing this to my husband as he is going to build a raised bed. We can't grow food in the soil that we have in the yard very easily and we have limited space. But we are committed to wanting to grow more. This will really help.

THANK YOU! I've wanted to build raised beds for a while, and the cheapest instructions I've gotten so far still cost over $80 for one 4x4 bed. I'm so excited about building these beds AND a compost bin for next to nothing! Also, the compost tea recipe is fantastic and greatly appreciated. So, this cheap gardener thanks you, from the bottom of her lazy heart!

Great Lens. I have been using raised beds for years and find they are an excellent way of gardening. I get a lot more out of less space with this method.

What a great lens! My husband has been gardening for years but last year was his first year with raised beds. We loved them and will tweak them this year - probably use some of your tips, as well. Thanks.

Great tips here! I am starting raised beds using some bricks and cement rubble that was abandoned out back, these will be permanent beds for veggies.

Good, informative lens! I've had the Square Foot Garden book for years and each Spring I say that i'm going to start a garden, but have never gotten around to doing it. Your lens has inspired me.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Really great step by step guide with all the info. Once a raised bed is assembled it can be helpful for people who have back pain issues to garden in. A comfortable height and width can be established to suit each person. I am lensrolling to my back care in the garden lens to help people who visit there.

I am so glad I "stumbled" on to your page! It is exactly what I have been looking for. I really like how you break it all down and put in you tips, like where and how you get some of your materials, lumber, etc%u2026 I think I will use your page this weekend to start my raised beds! Thanks!

Excellent info. I bet the raised beds make it easier to keep the weeds out. I am trying this in the spring. Thank You

EXCELLENT lens! Wish I had found it sooner. Raised beds are THE way to go. More than a 5 star lens in my opinion! Might want to add "Cinder Block Gardens"
