Raised Garden Vegetable Beds the Beginning

Creating Raised Garden Vegetable Beds is easy and fun but before you get started building there are a few little details you need to figure out.

When choosing the location of your vegetable garden you need to find out how much sun it gets, how good or bad your soil is, whether it is close enough to the kitchen to be convenient, and can you get to all sides of the garden for weeding.
Sun is number one, if you do not get enough sun the other things just do not matter. You need to get more than 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. The less direct the sun that you get is the more hours you need. Growing a vegetable garden under trees is not a good idea.

Soil is the next thing you need to check. Do you have good native soil? Since you are reading this I imagine you do not have good soil otherwise you'd probably just start digging and not bother thinking about raised beds. Drainage and fertility are the 2 main components of your soil. If your soil drains too slowly your plants will be unhappy and have wet feet. If your soil drains too quickly your plants will be constantly stressed for water. If you choose to plant vegetables you should attempt to create better soil than you would with a perennail like Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans.

How fertile is your soil? In most cases you will need to fertilize your vegetable garden to get the best possible produce.

Gardening with raised beds solves both of these problems. The water will drain properly if you put good soil into your bed and since you are buying good soil you may as well get the best soil you can for your vegetables.

Just how easy will it be to get to your garden and get your produce back to the kitchen? If it is too much trouble you will just end up with a weed infested mess and not be happy. You need to be able to get to and from your garden with a minimum of effort. Try to locate your garden as near to the kitchen door as is possible. Stepping out and grabbing a carrot is easier than trekking to the back of the yard, avoiding kids toys, and dog%u2026 stuff.

Weeding is a necessary evil when it comes to gardening. It is not hard if you plan your garden out in advance thinking about how you will be weeding. You need to be able to reach all parts of your garden bed from whichever sides you can get to. If you can get to it from all sides it can be much larger than if you can only get to it from the front and one side.

Weed early and often. The more frequently you weed the less time and effort it will be for you in your raised garden vegetable beds.
