We're just getting started here, so watch closely....you'll never know what you'll find!

History of rally-o!

Originally devised by Charles L. "Bud" Kramer, Rally Obedience is a form of dog obedience with a twist - a total focus on fun and excitement for the dog, handler and spectator.

Dog and handler teams follow a set course, performing the exercise indicated by 10-20 consecutive signs. Signs are numbered to indicate the course the handler and dog take during the performance.

There is a lot of variety with each rally course. And rally is different than Obedience in that handlers may talk to their dogs, praise them, and give them needed verbal commands.

Handlers can even use hand signals, point and in Novice and Advanced, clap and snap their fingers at anytime and as often as the handler needs. And it's not only allowed, but encouraged - making it a really fun sport!

Great Rally books and resources!

  • Ready To Rally! A Video Guide to APDT Rally DVD
Very clear and detailed video demonstrations and illuminating comments cover all APDT Rally signs and exercises from Levels 1, 2, and 3. A complete course run is also shown to give newcomers a feel for APDT Rally competition.
  • Rally Course Book: A Guide to AKC Rally Courses
Interested in AKC's newest competition? This book is designed to assist judges and instructors set up and teach rally courses. Part I is devoted to judging. Part II includes course layouts and exhibitor sheets for 10 different courses at each level: Novice, Advanced and Excellent. Exhibitors will find the book helpful for practicing courses, memorizing signs, and learning to execute the instructions correctly. Course designs and exhibitor sheets may be copied for use at Rally competitions.
  • Click Your Way to Rally Obedience
Rally is all about having fun and interacting with your dog while competing for titles. If you enjoy training your dog and want to take that training past the basics or if you are wondering what a good next step would be after the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate, Rally is a wonderful sport to train for.
  • Rally-O: The Style of Rally Obedience, 3rd Edition
Charles "Bud" Kramer is the originator of Rally Style Obedience, and his book tells you all you need to get started in this fun, new approach to dog obedience. Rally is designed to be a style of obedience that emphasizes fun and excitement for the dog, handler and spectator, with a more natural flow to the performance. The handler and dog complete the course by reading a series of signs along the course and performing the exercise listed on each sign, without additional commands from the judge. Scoring is also designed to allow less precision than traditional obedience. There are two levels: Level One is entirely on-lead, so beginners can participate early in their training. Level Two is for the more advanced dogs and is off-lead. Book explains everything you need to know to set up a trial, how to judge, a full description of the classes and exercises, and details about the signs needed. There are also different course designs shown for both levels.
  • Rally On
Explains how to master each Rally station, how to complete the exercises and what the key skills are for each exercise. This book is the perfect tool for both the student and the instructor with easy-to-read handling and training tips. For companion dogs, Rally can be a great introduction to the world of dog sports!
  • Rally Competition Record Book
Be ready for AKC Rally Obedience competition, coming soon! Keep a permanent record of legs and titles earned. Record date, venue, club, judge, location, conditions, level, exercises done, time, points, Qs, and more. 150 pages for recording scores. Summary pages for accumulating legs and points. Includes identification page with pockets to hold ID cards, health record, 3x5 cards, etc. Convenient size (5" x 7") slips easily into gear bag. Use for all venues, all levels, multiple dogs.
  • Rally Obedience Signs
Full set of 68 signs (Revised and supplemented as per the January 1, 2008 Regulations) to accompany Rally-O: The Style of Rally Obedience, 3rd Edition. For clubs or training groups just starting out with Rally-style obedience, this is the way to go! Levels 1 and 2. (Laminating recommended for more permanent use. "People who buy the unlaminated signs usually cut poster board as backing and then put them in plastic sheet protectors. I have tried it and it works fine." Suggestion from Charles "Bud" Kramer, author of Rally-O Style Obedience.)

*Note: These signs are now a complete set of the AKC version and revised and supplemented as per the January 1, 2008 regulations.
