Ralph Lauren is without a doubt one of the most well known fashion designers in the world, and there are few people who have never heard of him or seen his clothes.

He started his fashion career selling neckties at Brooks Brothers in New York City, while simultaneously taking business classes at night school. While at this job, he started designing his own line of neckties that were quite different from what was popular at the time, favoring wide, colorful ties over the regular narrow and dark models that most people wore. In a way they were closer to the style of British nobility than contemporary America, but apparently people really took to this style and in 1968 he designed the first line of "Polo" menswear in the same vain.

Ralph Lauren was becoming more and more successful, branching into women's clothing and eventually coming up with what would be the signature piece of his designs: the mesh sport shirt. It was an instant hit and has remained popular ever since then, and the basic design has been virtually unchanged.

In 1974 he started designing other products besides clothing, starting with Ralph Lauren Eyewear and continuing with clothing for kids, fragrances for both men and women and eventually footwear. Today there are even products in the home decorating category in the Ralph Lauren lineup, such as towels, drapes, rugs and silverware. While all these different products might have watered down the brand a bit, it still remains as popular as ever and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon!
