Random Acts of Kindness

Origins of Random Acts of Kindness

Though people like the Good Samaritan have been performing random acts of kindness for thousands of years, American writer Anne Herbert receives credit for founding the modern phenomenon. In 1982, Ms. Herbert wrote, "Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty" on a San Fransisco Bay area restaurant place mat.* Within the next decade, the phrase morphed into "random acts of kindness" and gained popularity.
Dr. Chuck Wall, a UCLA professor, then gained notoriety a decade later when he charged students in his class to commit a "random act of senseless kindness." Dr. Walls later went on to found Kindness USA which sponsors Kindness Awareness Week (week of February 12th), write kindness and motivation books and become a motivational speaker.

In the mid 90's several organizations formed around the world in response to the international World Kindness Movement. One such organization, The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, formed in Denver, Colorado, with the mission to "inspire people to practice kindness and to pass it on to others." The Foundation shares ideas on how to commit random acts of kindness, highlights individuals and groups around the world who are making a difference and shares ideas and lesson plans with schools and communities. Due to their influence, Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17th) morphed into Random Acts of Kindness Week in order to inspire more people to commit random acts of kindness in their daily lives.

*Ms. Herbert is often misquoted as to saying, "Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty."

Why Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week?

With all the negativity in news, high rates of unemployment, massive home forclosures and politicians fighting, we sometimes forget there are good things in the world. Things will get better. By doing even a small random act of kindness you may not change the world, but you will change a small corner of it. If enough of people change a small corner of the world we will soon change the world together. Will you help?

Speak up the next time you see an injustice. A few months ago, I witnessed a middle manager verbally abusing an employee. I made sure the employee was ok before I left but felt upset over the incident the rest of the day. That evening I went back to speak to another manager about the incident. I was told they've never had a customer come back to speak up for an employee before. Isn't that sad? It took only an hour of my time, but it ended up causing a better work environment for the other employees. I still get a big smile and greeted personally whenever I walk in the doors.

(I do ask that the children get their parent's permission first.) My dogs have also visited nursing homes, the local VA hospital, schools, and the library. Children often tell me about their pet dog who passed away or lives somewhere else now. People in the hospital and nursing homes will often tell a story about their favorite pet.

The Spiffiest Giant in Town

by Julia Donaldson

The Spiffiest Giant in Town is my favorite book to teach children about random acts of kindness. In the story, George, a giant, buys himself a new outfit. But on the way home, he meets several animals in need. He gives his shoe to a mouse who needs a home. He gives his tie to a giraffe who needs a scarf. His shirt becomes the sail for a boat with a sail.... George is back to wearing is old, scruffy clothes before he reaches home. However, the animals he helped along the way are all waiting for him with a note to thank him for helping them in their time of need.

These are all lovely ideas. It made me kind of sad though that people need to be reminded to mow an elderly neighbors lawn or hold the door for someone else. These used to be standard community service and politeness. Now you are surprised if people don't let the door slam in your face.
