Do You Perform Random Acts of Kindness?

From time to time, I perform random acts of kindness to brighten someone's day. I'd like to blog about what I do - not only to spur myself into remembering to do something for mankind, but to show others what happens when you spread a little love.

We're so rushed these days. People don't even take time to notice one another. It makes me sad. Paying it forward with random acts of unexpected kindness can change the world.

Has anyone ever done something like this for me? Yep. Just about a month ago, I took my 3 kids to El Fenix (a Tex-Mex restaurant) for lunch. When it was time for the check, my waitress told me someone had paid for our lunch.

He told the waitress he was a traveling businessman who missed his own wife and kids and just wanted to do something nice for someone else's wife and kids since he couldn't see his own.

It touched my heart.

How I Pay It Forward in My Neighborhood

What have I done?

I like to pay for the people behind me whenever I'm in a fast food drive-through. They've already ordered by the time we get up to the window, so I just tack their bill on to mine. I always watch to make sure the worker doesn't accept their money, too, before I drive off.

When my mom and I went to lunch one day, we picked up the tab for some local policemen and their family - a party of six.

I take all of our used clothes, toys, and books to the women and children's homeless shelter.

I send random PayPal tips to people who help me out in forums.

An elderly woman was in front of me in the grocery line. She was a few cents short of what she needed to get the ingredients for some recipe. She told the clerk to put it all back.

Not wanting to embarrass her, I said nothing. When it was my turn, I had the clerk quickly ring all of the items up and a bagger boy ran the items to her (she was old and walked slow). She came back and hugged me with tears in her eyes.

When we were shopping another day around Christmas, my daughter kept bugging me for a large Elmo stuffed doll ($30!!). I finally caved because I had the money to splurge.

As we went through the aisles, another little boy her age kept screaming for the Elmo doll. His mom said no, and you could tell they didn't have much money.

I took an extra Elmo with me to the counter. I paid for it and had the manager take it to her son and tell them Merry Christmas. I saw them looking happily shocked as we rounded the corner.

This all makes me feel good.

I always like to think that even the smallest thing can help. One thing some people suggest is to make sure you leave a public convenience no worse than you found it. I changed that to leave it at least as good as I found it. I'll pick something up and hand it to somebody if they've dropped something, and I'm always happy to give directions. I also make some charitable donations. Kindness begets kindness IMHO.

Such an inspiration! If only more people felt like this. Everyone can give kindness, but you don't see it as often as you should. 5 stars for a great lens.

I've just been the recipient of much kindness after having a surgery, and as an online business owner, I just wrote an article on how to pay it forward in business. Thanks!
