The bit around education was written during the early days of the NCLB act...GO BUSH GO! where I vomited daily as the rise of mediocrity as the American way became the norm. It was also the time where I fought alongside my collegues to save our little learning academy (which by the way was a success. Not based on the number students seamlessly continuting thier education or the countless letters from parents and students but the Broad Prize in Educaiton was won by the LBUSD and the shcolarship money went in a large majority to ODYSSEY GRADs...go TEAM go), but ...we lost anyway.
So since we all know too well the impacts of a C student making the rules and stlll have a leader with a sub-standard intellect, I say what WHAT...what the fuck ?. Education is about exposure and THINKING. I am my education, the books, music, travels, beliefs, career choice....IMPACTED by my education....We need a thinking population who can enter the world able to think, act, and access the world...the CASHEE a test written at the 7th/8th grade level is the standard of what 12 years of public education should provided its citizens...if youre around my age we took these tests and passed them in the 7th grade and secretly wondered about those who had to take them again and again. Those kids still live at home in their parents basement.

Nine yearsand counting.. working in education as a teacher (with intelligent college bound 10th graders, struggling students, about to drop-out students,ELL students, emotionally distrubed rich kids--they are the most frightening! and then some), I've been a head coach, a program designer, and curriculum developer and educational coordinator...I know a bit about the current state of Education in California....I'm worried.

- Small pillow that can be stuffed in your day/backpack-it not just for the flight. Use it on the bus or train as you travel. Waiting is part of travel, you never know when you'll be waiting for a train or boat. Travel involves long days and your butt will thank you for saving it from the benches, steps, or ground that acts as your resting spot.
- Small Blanket-same idea as the pillow. In my travels my blanket (one year I used a beach towel, it was too bulky) has been much more than just a blanket. Its protected me from the elements, dried my skin, cushioned my head, and provided comfort in the most uncomfortable of situations. I roll it up and stick it through the straps on my backpack.
- Hackysac-Fill the time, get some exercise,and make friends with fellow travelers as well as the locals.
- iPod w/adapters-fully loaded with music, videos, audio books, podcasts, and playlists to suit my every possible mood. Get away from it all as you slip away into your own world or bust out your portable speakers and start theparty while bonding with your travel companions and getting to know the natives.
- Facial Wipes-A good wipe down can change your whole attitude.
