Who Is Randy Alcorn?

Randy Alcorn is the founder and director of Eternal Perspective Ministries (EPM), a nonprofit ministry devoted to promoting an eternal viewpoint and drawing attention to people in special need of advocacy and help. He's also one of my favorite contemporary writers (I don't have many--most of my favorite writers are dead). He's written more than twenty books (over one-and-a-half million in print), some of which will be the focus of this lens.

Randy was a pastor for fourteen years before founding EPM in 1990. He is a popular teacher and conference speaker and has taught on the adjunct faculties of Multnomah Bible College and Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon.

Randy's Mission Statement

This is what Randy says about his ministry:

"My ministry focus is communicating the strategic importance of using our earthly time, money, possessions and opportunities to invest in need-meeting ministries that count for eternity," Alcorn says. "I do that by trying to analyze, teach and apply the implications of Christian truth."

So What's the Connection, Lensmaster Cook?

Well, none really. I just love Randy's books. So much so that I sell a bunch of them on my online store.

I was researching the resurrection of Christ one Sunday morning in preparation for teaching my Sunday School class and I ran across Randy's writings on the EPM website. I was immediately impressed with his Biblical insights into Christ's resurrection and the implications for us as believers. As I scanned through more and more of his writings on the web site, I realized that here was a truly gifted writer with uncommon spiritual insight. I immediately started ordering his books from Amazon.com.

Money, Possessions and Eternity

The book from Randy's pen that has helped me most is a rather thick paperback (504 pages) called Money, Possessions and Eternity. I consider it to be probably the best book ever written on the subject. I had already read the smaller book entitled The Treasure Principle (which you should definitely read--it will give you an appetite for the larger work). Some of the topics covered inside its pages are:

Why is money so important to God?
Is prosperity theology right or wrong?
How can we be liberated from materialism?
What should we do about debt?
How much does God want us to give?
How can we best help the poor and reach the lost?
What about gambling? investing? insurance? saving? retirement? inheritance?
How can we leave our children a true heritage?
How can we use money in ways that God rewards?

I have known our Lord for 59 yrs. and have always looked forward to Heaven but never had such a clear understanding of it as I now do after reading your book, "Heaven". What a relief to know that all the good, beautiful things of our universe and earth will be redeemed; along with our bodies. This has brought my excitement to a whole new level and has revolutionized my teaching and preaching ministries. Thank you so much for this wonderful work of research and revelation.
