The Big Unit

Welcome to my lens on Major League Baseball's 'Big Unit', Randy Johnson. He is definitely one of the most charismatic pitchers in the Major League and a future Hall of Fame member.

Not only is he a great pitcher but he also donates lots of cash to charities. He recently made a $400,000 donation to the American Red Cross' relief efforts following the devastation in South East Asia. Through his "Strikeout Homelessness" program, which he started while with the Mariners, he has personally donated more than $300,000 to related charities and organizations.

Randy's uniform number is 51 with the exception of the two years he played with the Yankees where his number was 41 and 1 year while he played for the Seattle Mariners he also wore the number 34.

Randy Johnson's Perfect Game

At the ripe old age of 40 Randy Johnson, a five-time Cy Young Award winner, became the oldest pitcher in Major League history to throw a perfect game. The game was Randy's second no-hitter and was the 17th perfect game in Major League history.

Here is perfection by the numbers:

  • Total pitches: 117
  • Strikes: 87
  • Balls: 30
  • Batters faced: 27
  • Velocity of last pitch: 98 mph, striking out Eddie Perez.
  • Strikeouts: 13
  • Number of batters in which he reached 3-ball count: 1
  • Number of batters in which he reached 2-ball count: 8
  • Swings and misses: 28
  • Foul balls: 31
  • Pitches that Johnny Estrada saw in three at-bats: 22
  • Estrada foul balls: 13
  • Total pitches in the seventh inning: 14
  • Total pitches in seventh clocked at 97 or 98 mph: 6

One thing about a perfect game that no one ever seems to mention though... baseball is a TEAM sport and even though the pitcher does throw the ball exceptional teamwork is needed to pull off the perfect game, all it takes is one error and that is the end of the perfect game. So I would like to congratulate the 2003 Diamondbacks for helping Randy pull off this amazing feat.

Randy Johnson at a Glance

Randall David Johnson (born September 10, 1963), nicknamed "The Big Unit", is a left-handed Major League Baseball starting pitcher. Over a 21-year career, Johnson has played for 6 different teams.

The 6-foot-10 Johnson has been celebrated for having one of the most dominant fastballs in the game. He regularly approached, and occasionally exceeded, during his prime. However, his signature pitch is a hard, biting slider. Johnson has won the Cy Young Award five times, second only to Roger Clemens' seven.

For all active pitchers through the season, Johnson is first in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (10.67 - which is also first for all starting pitchers in history) and hit batsmen (188 - third all-time), first in strikeouts (4,875 - second all-time), fourth in hits allowed per nine innings pitched (7.24 - 10th all-time), first in shutouts (37 - 57th all-time), third in wins (303 - 22nd all-time), eighth in ERA (3.27), third in wild pitches (104), and seventh in won-lost percentage (.648). His 4,875 strikeouts are also first all-time among left-handed pitchers. In addition, he pitched one of the 18 perfect games in Major League Baseball history.

Randy Johnson Kills A Bird

Saturday 24th of March 2001

During a spring training game vs the San Francisco Giants on March 24th 2001 Randy Johson threw a fastball that hit and killed a dove that was unfortunate enough to fly in the balls path. The bird literally exploded in a cloud of feathers.

Jeff Kent, the Giants second baseman picked up the dead bird with his bare hands and jokingly pointed toward Johnson before removing it from the field.

Randy Johnson, of course, was not amused by this incident.

The video of this unfortunate accident is systematically being removed from the internet and fewer and fewer copies are still available for viewing.
