Randy Pausch?
Well, he's the lucky guy with the lovely wife and kids on the picture. Yup, that's him. His name has been going around the world wide web for some time now. Yes, you may have heard something about 'the last lecture', or the 'achieving your childhood dreams lecture'. And there was something about Randy Pausch being a professor. There, rings a bell now, does it? I took the time to check it out and thought it was well worth a squidlens. Stick around, you'll be glad you did.
Note: Randy's latest news are at the bottom part of this lens.
Why millions of people have already heard of Randy Pausch.
Randy Pausch is a Carnegy Mellon University professor. Last September, he gave his last lecture, knowing for a fact that it WAS going to be his very last. Randy Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006. Everything that could be done was done. But the doctors had to tell him at the end of last summer: you only have a few months to live. You could expect a lecture in the worst possible meaning of the word, something preachy, or even something teary. But Randy chose to share laughter and sharp vision on what matters most. His lecture was articulated in three parts :
- achieving your childhood dreams
- helping others achieve their dreams
- lessons learned
I'm not going to give details because I'd only spoil it for you and that's definitely not what my goal is here, but what I can tell you is that it has touched millions of human hearts and minds.

The Last Lecture
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." --Randy Pausch
A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

I am concerned. Randy usually puts in a few updates every month on his condition and he has not put on in since the end of June. Is he doing okay?

Randy, A friend told me about this young professor who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had such an amazing attitude. I immediately started reading everything I could about you and have been following your progress.I can't begin to tell you what a difference you've made in my life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 and in 2005 found it was in my spinal column. Your story has been such an inspiration to me and I'm sure, a lot of others as well. I pray for you daily and am certain your spirit will live on in your precious childre.

The lecture and the book have both touched my heart. I too have an incurable form of cancer and am fighting with all my might to stay and watch my son grow up. I have had a lot more time with my son than you may have with yours and for that I am truly grateful. I used to think I was being selfish when I would grasp any opportunity to do fun and silly things - but not anymore - not since listening to your lecture.
You have inspired many and your legacy will live on.
God bless you sir.

I feel blessed to have seen your lecture, and read your book. I'm at a loss for words, as so many people have written what I am feeling and thinking about you and the way you have chosen to live life knowing it will soon come to an end. Anyone who has seen your lecture owes you a big thank you for touching their lives in such an inspirational way. God bless you Randy!

What an amazing person you are. You have been dealt the worst of the deck yet you have chosen to deal with it with courage, wisdom and the biggest heart of them all. I pray for you and your family. May you continue to have time with them on earth. Know that the words you have spoken and written have touched many lives including mine. Your children and wife are very lucky to have you in their lives. Your dreams will continue on through your children's lives.
Thank you for being an inspiration to us all.

July 24th, 2008: The cancer is progressing
(The lastest from Randy's update page above.)
A biopsy last week revealed that the cancer has progresed further than we had thought from recent PETscans. Since last week, Randy has also taken a step down and is much sicker than he had been. He's now enrolled in hospice. He's no longer able to post here so I'm a friend posting on his behalf because we know what many folks are watching this space for updates. Pictures of Childhood.
Some people, I know, would rather not think of their own childhood. But we all get second chances when we get to build the childhood of other children, our own or simply those that are a part of our lives.
