Rangoli - a beautiful folk art of India!

India is famous for its rich culture and traditions. So much so that each state even has its own language, cuisine, festivals, culture and traditions! If you live in one state, you may not know about the folk art of another; they're passed on from generation to generation.

Rangoli is one such tradition. It is very popular in most of the Indian states. Rangoli has different names from state to state. In southern India, it is known as Kolam; in eastern India, it is called Alpana.

As a child, I was always drawn to this beautiful art form. I delighted in seeing women folk decorating the entrance of their homes with Rangoli designs and patterns. I have been always a lover of art, color, designs and things which are creative. Over the years, my fascination for rangoli and rangoli designs has become stronger and now I also make sure that Idraw rangoli when we celebrate Diwali. Even my son loves helping me out in my designs!

This lens is about Rangoli Kolam Designs and how to make free hand Rangoli or Kolam designs and patterns. It is my pleasure to share this beautiful art form from India with other parts of the world. I will be happy if my lens sparks your interest a little too!

Enjoy!

What is Rangoli?

'Rangoli' is a Sanskrit word and it means a creative expression of art through the use of color. The word Rangoli is a combination of two words "rang" (color) + "aavalli" (row), which means row of colors.

Basically, Rangoli is the art of drawing images and motifs on the floor and walls of homes using different color powders.

Mostly people draw Rangoli on special occasions but Diwali is one such festival, when most of the Indian household draw a Rangoli to welcome Goddess Laxmi(Goddess of wealth)

I have been always a lover of art, color, designs and things which are creative. Over the years, my fascination for rangoli and rangoli designs has become stronger and now I also make sure that I draw rangoli when we celebrate Diwali. Even my son loves helping me out in my designs.

Rangoli making is a creative outlet. I can take various adult coloring pages design and make Rangoli designs out of them. And the best thing is that it is not permanent. You can keep on experimenting and at the same time, you can decorate your house with these lovely designs.

Some adult coloring designs like the ones given below, can be used as Rangoli pattern.

Rangoli Making with Kids

Kids love making Rangoli as Kids love Colors!

Rangoli making is fun and if your kids love coloring and coloring pages then it is good to introduce them to make Rangoli. Traditionally Rangoli is made using the fingers by holding the Rangoli powder with the index finger and the thumb, but for making it easier you can use basic cones and as per the border width required, you make the hole of the cone and put the Rangoli powder inside.

This is what my son had drawn for one of the Diwali celebration and he was quiet happy. Also to make the background as per your desired color, use the background color and cover the area evenly and then on top of that you draw your design and it comes out lovely.

Here I was helping him out and making him comfortable. The next one he did independently :)

How to Draw Rangoli with Stencils

Rangoli making made easy using Stencils

Rangoli Stencil

Rangoli making is made easy with the help of stencils. There are various designs available in the market. The best way to design using stencil is to sprinkle the colors evenly over the stencil and you can use the best way to sprinkle color evenly. We usually use sieve or sifter and it comes out beautifully.

You can draw Rangoli with the stencil over the floor directly or you can use a background color and then do the stencil design on top of that.

Water Rangoli

Rangoli on water is beautiful and appealing!

water rangoli

Rangoli can be drawn on water as well. yes you heard it right, water Rangoli. Infact water rangolis are quite popular as it gives a 3d look to your design.

How to draw Rangoli on water?

Rangoli drawing process is same, however instead of drawing Rangoli on the floor, you are using a container filled with water. The easy instructions are as follows :

1. Take a clear container either glass or steel with atleast 2" to 3" depth and apply oil inside the container.

2. Now fill the container with water.

3. Spread rice powder or dry distemper** powder evenly over the water surface. Your rangoli surface is ready for your design.

4. Now using regular rangoli drawing process, you can draw your Rangoli designs.

* Please make sure that you decide the place to keep your water Rangoli before making the Rangoli as it will be hard to move the container around, once the rangoli is drawn.

** You can also use regular talcum powder to form the base for your water Rangoli.

Diwali is the time, when Rangoli making is necessary in homes. SO this Diwali, try something different. Try making water Rangoli.
