Raqs Sharqui

Welcome to our Squidoo lens. You've probably landed here because you're a fan of belly dancing and have already discovered that Raqs Sharqui is Arabic for "eastern dance" and is a common way to describe Belly Dancing by those of us "in the know" (smile).

I'm not one of those people that you'll be oohing and awing over because of the fantastic videos I've uploaded of myself as a belly dancer. Au contraire! If you ever find any videos of me online it will be because someone was sneaking some footage of me as I was taking lessons; it's not pretty....

Part of the art and grace of belly dancing is taking what is actually very hard work and making it look graceful and easy. Unfortunately, I probably have another 20 years or so of lessons before I will evolve to that point.

Instead, I'm just an ardent fan of the art form.

I think it's beautiful and sexy and a real celebration of what it means to be a woman (no disrespect to those male - and very male - belly dancers out there).

It's just an added bonus that it's a fantastic workout, too!

I'm just fascinated by it all.

I'm happy to meet a fellow fan and belly dancers, and I look forward to getting to know you a bit.
