A different type of sex symbol of the 1960s, not a blonde bombshell, but auburn-haired in a prehistoric bikini!
A new reigning 60s international sex symbol took her cinematic throne as soon as Raquel Welch emerged from the sea in her purposely depleted, furry prehistoric bikini in One Million Years B.C. (1966). Remember this movie and all the publicity that followed?
That movie produced THE most definitive and best-selling pin-up poster of that time. After a major dry spell following the death of Marilyn Monroe in 1962, the auburn-haired Ms. Welch effortlessly assumed Marilyn's title and forever wiped away the notion to be a sex symbol, you had to be blonde!
Quick, what do you think of Raquel Welch?

Raquel Welch (born September 5, 1940) is a Golden Globe-winning American actress who reached fame during the 1960s.
Welch, oldest of three children, was born Jo Raquel Tejada in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Josepha Sarah and Armando Carlos Tejada Urquizo. Her father, who immigrated from La Paz, Bolivia, was an aerospace engineer of Spanish-Castilian descent; her mother was an Irish-American. Welch is a relative of the only female president of Bolivia, Lydia Gueiler Tejada.
In 1942, Armando Tejada was transferred to San Diego, California. The family moved to the suburb of La Jolla, where Welch grew up. She took dancing lessons as a child, and was winning beauty pageants by the time she was a teenager. Among her titles were "Miss Photogenic," "Miss La Jolla," "Miss Contour," and "Miss San Diego." In 1957, she was named "Miss Fairest of the Fair" at the San Diego County Fair. After attending La Jolla High School, she entered San Diego State College on a theater arts scholarship. The following year she married a high school sweetheart, James Welch.

One Million Years B.C. at a glance
One Million Years B.C. is a 1966 (released in the United States in 1967) adventure film/fantasy film starring Raquel Welch set - loosely - in the time of cavemen. The film was made by UK's Hammer Film Productions, and was a remake of the 1940 Hollywood film One Million B.C.. It is marketed with the tagline "Travel back through time and space to the edge of mans beginnings...discover a savage world whose only law was lust!"
Like the original film, this remake is largely ahistorical. It portrays dinosaurs and humans living together, whereas the last dinosaurs became extinct roughly 65 million years BC, and homo sapiens (modern humans) did not exist until about 200,000 years BC. Harryhausen has stated in a commentary of the unfinished film, Creation, shown on the King Kong 1933 DVD, that he did not make One Million Years B.C. for "professors" who in his opinion "probably dont go to the cinema anyway."
Myra Breckinridge at a glance
Her first starring role
![]()
Myra Breckinridge is a campy American comedy film released in 1970. Based on the 1968 novel of the same name by Gore Vidal, the film was directed by Michael Sarne, with Raquel Welch in the title role. It also starred John Huston as Buck Loner, Mae West as Letitia Van Allen (spelled Leticia in the film), Farrah Fawcett, Roger Herren, and Roger C. Carmel. Tom Selleck made his film debut in a small role as one of Leticia's "studs". Theadora Van Runkle was costume designer for the film, but Edith Head designed Mae West's costumes. Like the novel, the picture was controversial for its sexual explicitness, but unlike the novel, Myra Breckinridge received little to no critical praise and has been cited as one of the worst films ever made.

I like Raquel, because she proved that you don't have to play dumb to be a sex symbol. She came across as a very intelligent and wise woman.

Mother Nature is such a cruel one, letting these beautiful women grow old. When such a pleasant sight to the eyes ages, we, women feel cheated.
