Is There A Difference Between A Coin Collector And A Numismatist?
Most coin collectors mix up the terms coin collecting and numismatics. But these two are actually very different, though they are similar in concept. Coin collecting is the art of collecting coins, while numismatics is the study of coins. A coin collector will want to add different coins to his or her collection for various reasons, but not always to study them.
A numismatist, will look at coins from one point of view only- for studying them. The study done by a numismatist will not necessarily be confined to just coins. In some cases, the study of a numismatist will go further than the coin itself, and border on other aspects, such as the history and geography of when and where it was created, who created it, for what purpose was the coin made, etc.
In short, coin collectors and numismatists are different people, but each can fit within the same definition of the other depending on the way they are utilizing their coins.
